RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I wouldn't be surprised if he used my posts even though I never commented on the permission thread.

Good News!

The guy who made Bitcoin is a genius.

I declare we build a statue in his honor(and a bigger statue of me standing behind him, with one hand on his shoulder and the other hand pointing straight out, presenting him to the world. A fitting statue for the soon-to-be Global Emperor). I'll just need all yer Bitcoins in my cyber-wallet!

Good News!

Bitcoins are expensive as shit last I checked. A shame, would've been a good way to earn back some money as I've overspent on my PC by a lot.

RE: Good News!

Funny how the people with good grades become the servants, not the leaders.

I would tell my friends "He may have good grades and be succesful in school, but he'll be working FOR someone, which might even be me."

If I start a company, and it becomes successful, and all these "smart" students flock to it, I would ask people this simple question "Who da boss?" Biggrin

Good News!

I want to see this report. I truly hope it will not be lost to the sands of time.

And yes, Stephen is a colossal asshole. I also truly hope he will see the error of his ways. But with the revelations of this thread (and the other one) that I've only just learned about half an hour ago?

I pity him. I believe I can picture his state of mind as he was browsing the forum: self-satisfied in the knowledge that he was going to get a damn good grade, while these losers just didn't get it. Man, he was gonna excel in excellence (or whatever his high school's motto is)! But he can't browse for much longer, though; he's gotta hit the mall soon to get some replacement supplies for his trendy, ultra-hip footwear!! It's like he didn't have to pay attention to what they had to say at all!!!!!! (I bet he wears Abercrombie & Fitch clothing.)

I gotta say though, you folks absolutely fucking reamed him throughout this thread. And I cannot blame you.

But I want to see that report. Hopefully I can e-mail him through his profile page. Hopefully I can get permission to show you lot.

Wait. Permission? The fuck do I need that for? HE didn't need it!

Will report back soon(er or later).

Good News!

Transcript of the message I sent him:

About your school report on School Survival

Evening, Stephen! Hope things are going well! (Well, I HOPE it's evening when you read this!)

I'm Trar from School Survival. You know, that place you apparently did a school report on because you thought we were all a bunch of weirdos?

Anyway, you said you'd post the PowerPoint from your project for us to look at. Judging from the fact that you ignored requests from other users NOT to use their posts, I think you should at least let us see the work that you included them in! If you could please do so, that would be great and excellent and several other adjectives! I speak for my fellow forum-goers who would be interested in seeing it, as I am.

And let me just say that I truly regret not finding the thread where you revealed your project to us sooner. I would have given you permission to use my posts faster than something that goes really fast. Like the rotation of the Earth. I hope you used them anyway. I wish I was there.

Sincerely awaiting your response,
Trar

RE: Good News!

Yeah, I'd really like to see the report, too.

Bringing these conversations into schools, hopefully in a more respectful manner, is one step toward changing things.

Bringing them into the media is another.

Sometimes people can change. I think it's worth trying to understand why they are the way they are, and imagining several paths forward for everyone.

That's difficult when a person is being nasty, offensive, smugly condescending, and outright wrong. Even more so when they're gleefully engaging in whatever you call this.

But, what leads people to be like that? Where do they end up? I suppose it depends.

(Insert wall of text about ethics, justice, drama, personality, culture, change, and all that.)

Maybe we could all make our own reports. Smile

Good News!

He struck me as your average, bread and butter student...he might just be yet another one of the countless 'successes' of public education as defined by JTG. He might forget about most of this after he graduates and emigrates to the real world; there could be a better chance of him realizing how screwed up it is if he chances on another group or forum post with views similar to ours. Then again there's a good chance he could just start going on about how high school isn't that bad, you just need to toughen up because this is how the world works! I can't really tell. Maybe the tone of said hypothetical future argument would matter in his case, especially if he comes across one of future-us in a bad mood.

Good News!

Also, most of his posts were one to two lines, at least on my monitor (1366x768 strikes me as rather smallish these days). Most of which were also, as you all know, blithely ignorant.

Also also, no reply yet. I really, really hope he didn't fill in a disposable address or just delete my message. I might try again if I don't get anything in a month. I WILL see that report.
