RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

This Is What Happens When A Kid Leaves Traditional Education

Short article with two embedded videos:

Hackschooling makes me happy: Logan LaPlante at TEDxUniversityofNevada [11m]

Sir Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity? [20m]

Excerpt:

My decision to leave school behind when I was in college came from the same beliefs I hold today about education. I felt confined within the system and I felt it wasn’t going to lead me somewhere I wanted to be. It didn’t matter whether I was studying business, engineering, marketing or music, I did not enjoy the methods and couldn’t see a way to change things except by leaving. Aside from what society would make us think, leaving education and a diploma behind was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made as I was then able to explore and learn anything I wanted without having to worry about a rigid structure which promotes memorization and useless testing. I believe we will be OK if we leave the current education system behind and choose other methods. This isn’t to say homeschool is for everyone, but I truly believe that a drastic, and I mean drastic, change in the way our education system functions needs to happen, and soon.

Heh, why :/?

What are her thoughts on it? Maybe it could lead to some meaningful conversation about changing how school works? If you get your mom to back you up, and some fellow students, maybe you could sell them on the idea of custom pathways? Smile

My mom lives in Florida, and I'd rather not associate with her. Also I believe it's a county wide thing with the High Schools :/

I've got an idea due to this video, I'll blame my shitty education, my unwillingness to learn and my overall ignorance and laziness on school system.
Because I can.
Because everyone will hate on me.
Because I fucking hate it.

Whatever.
(actually I also just realized that I blamed it on that before, too, so nothing changed because of this post, wow, "useless post 2014"....)

RE: This Is What Happens When A Kid Leaves Traditional Education

@LedoS, rather than focusing on blame, maybe you can take steps to undo the damage, restore your interest in learning, and help others understand what the problem is? Smile

@Chanku, ah, I see. Maybe there's a way to.change things at the county and school level?

It could be worth a try. Education is under a lot of pressure to meet 21st century learner needs. The key is to go to them with a proposal they.can understand and say yes to with minimal effort on their part.

I think the best move is to develop a Personal Learning Plan that you can pursue regardless of school, but add a part that involves optional bits that could replace parts of school tgat aren't working for you.

There are so many ways to learn various subjects now, including free college level.courses, personal and collaborative projects, and resources like Khan Academy, YouTube, and G+. It's possible to learn from, and even interact with, experts in a range of fields that don't fit into most school programs.

If more people take the steps to take advantage of these options, and demonstrate their learning somehow, I think it will go a long way toward opening the eyes of educators, administrators, and parents about how to play a more supportive role in people's learning journeys.

Thoughts on all that?
