RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Does this happen at anyone else's school?

My school attempts to enforce an ID card policy. Sometimes my school has security guards to come in to your classroom at random in order to check whether everyone has their ID card with them (regardless if they're wearing it or not), and if you don't have it, you'll get detention for not having your fucking ID card. I've been in detention once for this fucking shit. Sorry, I think a detention for not bringing an ID card is stupid, hell I think punishment for not bringing an ID card is stupid enough to begin with.

Guess what my school's justification is for this: sometimes, kids from outside our school will come in at lunch for whatever reason, and those that don't have our ID cards can be assumed as being outside the school. I mean, that's just fucking stupid to be honest. Apparently, these kids sometimes sell drugs.

I mean, there has to be a better way than something that's easy to forget. How about simply asking what your class is, and telling the security guards to go verify your claim? Much easier and far more accurate than a fucking ID card.

RE: Does this happen at anyone else's school?

How about having a school where (1) people actually know each other, or (2) where it's okay for people from outside the school to come in, because it isn't a closed-door prison?

Barring that, they could just fingerprint everyone or use retinal scans... hard to forget your fingers or eyes!

RE: Does this happen at anyone else's school?

My school won't let you leave class, for any reason, without an ID and planner. Sort of as an incentive to get people to use the planner, but students see past that.

And yes, they do take this to the extreme. They'd rather you vomit at your seat or crap in your pants than let you out of class to the bathroom. Well, administration tries to anyway. Most teachers are more reasonable in an "emergency" but still people define "emergency" differently.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

RE: Does this happen at anyone else's school?

This is stupid. I can see the school's side, but it's also just stupid.

It's fine to have ID cards. My school didn't even have ID cards.. Well, they did, but they weren't really a thing anyone cared about.

And it's fine to want to have every student always having their ID on them. It can have it's benefits in certain situations. But the extent of which it's being enforced is fucking stupid. like damn, give them a verbal warning first at least! Nope, too much time to do nothing, gotta harass teenagers if they have their fucking ID.

Nope. Although other schools in the county do. I don't, then again most students at my school enjoy more privileges than most students, and the school has rather relaxed policies. Not to mention a huge campus, and only having two SRO's. I would expect ID cards, since we have no uniforms or anything, and it's easy to slip in with other students.

Hah, you could say "I don't go to school here, see ya." Or give them a false name. Then again, they might get the police involved at that point.

What if you showed them an alternative ID, like a state ID or work ID... or some mail addressed to you?

If hypothetically, it's true that a student that doesn't have an ID card really isn't a student of that school, why would you give them detention if he/she isn't even a student?

Colleges generally have ID cards, in part for that reason. Sometimes they can get you discounts places, too.

But it gets at this question... should school be a giant campus, or a smaller community where people know each other, and where the students themselves could handle the situation if someone problematic was among them?

I can imagine the next step in this is to ask students to use their ID cards like punch cards, checking in and out and using that to track attendance.

@xcriteria School in general can definitely be changed from the closed door prisons we have to everyone actually knowing each other. How to do it is another way, though changing the authoritarian style of things is a step in the right direction. Oh, and no, they actually don't let you use any other ID. School ID only. Seems BS. I also can't imagine my school bothering to buy stuff like fingerprints. My school's broke, I'll say that.

@planetfall666 That sounds horrible IMO. The elementary schools I used to go restricted bathroom usage. That's especially bad for the young age many people are at that time.

@154bmag That student would probably get sent to jail, like everyone is in this country.

College does have ID, but you don't really have security going in and out of classes asking for it, nor do they roam the halls beating anybody who might have forgotten his ID in his dorm(though getting into the dorm generally requires an ID card if there is no attendant of sorts at the time. When that happens, you'll probably have to make it in behind people who remembered to bring their ID)

Hell, even US citizens are not required by law to carry ID on them(though if a police officer asks and you don't have, you'll have to go through the process of being taken in and wait till they can ID you...which is quite time consuming, making carrying your ID a useful option when compared to the alternative of not having it)

We have ID cards, but we only use them for stuff like High School Football Game discounts.

My college ID serves more as a discount card too. Sometimes the discounts are pretty good(they had frozen yogurt at a local place 50% off for students of the college who displayed ID before making payment. Pretty good deal in my opinion when frozen yogurt generally costs $0.50 an oz.)
