RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Another fucking Spanish project.

I believe that Spanish is actually a subject that IS helpful in the job market (Unlike LAL 7, Science, or PE/Health) but that doesn't stop it from being my most hated subject. I don't know why. It may be the constant note taking, or the unnecessary usage of Spanish where it doesn't need to be used, but the projects particularly annoy me.

One of my gripes with school (even before I hated school altogether) has always been projects where I lack the resources or experiences to do them. In this case, I haven't seen my family in at least 2 years now except my grandmother. And I have to write down which chores at least ten of my family members do in Spanish. I also found yet another reason to hate Spanish, and especially Spanish projects: It's what pushes World's Worst Linux Distro on me most. God, that OS is quickly rising on my list of strongest reasons why I hate school.

Anyway, I need tips: How can I stop procrastination? I don't want to get held back, especially not in damn Middle School. So I need to do this project, cause I'm getting an "F" in Spanish if not.

Another fucking Spanish project.

As for doing the project, you can just make up what chores to write down.No one will investigate to see if you are lying.

As for procrastination, I've found that the best way for me to do terribly boring things is to figure out how long it takes to do essays/worksheets/other BS, then set aside x amount of time to do it after doing something fun. Since it's worth that much of your grade, I'd recommend you give yourself some extra time.

RE: Another fucking Spanish project.

How many people have "at least ten family members?"

Just translate the chores you and your grandmother do.

Regarding procrastination, one strategy is to "toggle" between the task you don't want to do, and something you find interesting, energizing, and even fun. Spend a few minutes on one, then a few minutes on the other, and so on (or do longer periods on each, or just do what chained suggested if you can do the whole assignment in one shot.)

For this, you basically need to look up 10 words, after identifying the chores?

Or is it more complicated than that?

One chore per family member, and I can only use my notes.

RE: Another fucking Spanish project.

I can't get over the question, "how many families have 10 family members?"

Questions:

When is this due?

Did your teacher come up with the assignment on their own? Have you pointed out its flaws and asked if you can approach it from a different angle?

I'm thinking of all of this through the lens of another discussion I'm having, over teachers and how they're shackled by standardized tests. I'm wondering... what is the source of this assignment? Is this being forced on your teacher, or by their choice... and, where and why did they come up with it?

RE: Another fucking Spanish project.

Ten fucking family members? Ten? TEN???? What is this, a native speaker class in which they try to force stereotypes upon the students? Jesus Christ.

I'm sorry, but what kind of Spanish class are you in? Is it (gulp) Native Speaker? I'm sorry, I had a really bad experience in that class. It was perhaps my least favorite class for many reasons. For one, every student in that class was loud and annoying. As an introvert, I'm not fond of that. Second, the class was quite small and smelly. I could go on and on, but I don't want to de-rail the thread.

Well, since you clearly don't have 10 family members around you, I'd say troll them with fictional ones. It can't hurt. Or you could tell the teacher "I don't have 10 family members", that might help.

RE: Another fucking Spanish project.

What I always did in Spanish was use the vocab words that I knew they wanted me to use mundanely in absolutely bullshitty ways. Like "For vacation I visited my grandfather on the moon" and "I bought leather forks in the market." I made up so much nonsense for that class... then again one of my spanish teachers hated me because I was too creative. The other two thought I was funny, though. Guess it depends on what kind of teacher you have.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.
