RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Slow walkers

Does anyone get annoyed of people that walk slow? It's so annoying, especially when there's no space to walk around the fucking person. And you having to walk slower and look like an idiot. I mean it's bad enough to go to school and be surrounded by all these retards.

Slow walkers

Indeed I like to run through the hallways and avoid the slow people, but when I'm tired or my foot acts up (which happens sometimes) I'm one of the slowest of the bunch. And while I hate it when people are slow and hate it even more when I'm slow, I understand why.

We're not paid to get to class quickly or to be respectful of those around us. We're all suffering the hell of indoctrination and imprisonment. We're all tired. We don't care if you don't have patience for us, because we're flat out of patience ourselves.

Are we retards for not escaping this grim fate?

RE: Slow walkers

For real. It might seem like a petty complaint to some people, but I remember this was super annoying when I was in school. Herpderp yay let's walk five abreast across the hallway at a leisurely pace and then all cram through one side of the double doors and not bother to open the other one.

And if you're late to class there's never an acceptable excuse for it unless someone wrote you a pass. Always with the fucking passes.

I can feel the same way. I mean, seriously, the people that are walking through the hallway can be some slow asses, sometimes they don't even notice it. It gets really annoying. It's worse when there is barely any room to maneuver and your class is far away.

I'm not sure what's worse, kids walking slow in the hallways or kids walking the wrong way on the fucking stairs! I'm sorry, but I hate it when I'm walking down, there's someone walking up the stairs on the same set of stairs, when there's a fucking stair set for the same direction right next to you! I mean, it's somewhat understandable when there are a bunch of slow asses in that stair set and there's no room, but when there really isn't that much traffic it's really fucking annoying.

RE: Slow walkers

Being interested in issues of consequence is too much work. Razz

I get it, though. I've done the slow walk, though it wasn't until I was at a call center, and I was still too worried about bothering others to block anyone's way. When I was in school getting worked up about it, it was partly because I still cared and partly for the sake of efficiency itself.

But the triviality of the matter doesn't mean we can't get in some commiseration about it. :>

Technically everybody walks slow relative to my own walking speed.

I guess you can say I walk like a New Yorker: fast like I need to get somewhere quick but in fact don't.

There isnt a dont for me. Its just my natural pace. I also have a sort of marching like stance, with a straight posture, that makes me look like a mysterious strong looking KGB officer from an old James Bond movie.

has anyone noticed that some people dint walk with their feet facing straight and/or perfectly inline with their body symmetry?

I'm annoyed by people who bug me about it, even though I've already explained why I walk slow (I'm short, plus I'm not exactly a healthy weight)

Slow walkers

I'm overweight but people are often surprised with my agility.

I can't recall how many times people thought I was incapable of actually running, and maintaining my speed. Of course that was usually bad news for my prey...never underestimate your foe.
(I actually chased a friend of mine through the school, and caught him when I found him slumped in a chair trying to catch his breath. He surprised by my stamina, and I just told him I like hunting people running)

I've read that the alignment of your feet(the points facing: inwards, straight or outwards) when walking/running supposedly has something to do with how much you were involved in athletics(or at least anything requiring controlled running)

RE: Slow walkers

The worst is when there's a group of people walking in a LINE ACROSS THE HALL and you're trying to get to a class across the school.

RE: Slow walkers

^Indeed. That's why you do it NY style Shove through and apologize later(or never, depending how fast your moving and how fast the line is moving). Ive always found it less successful when you ask people to make space(though it depends of a variety of factors).

Sometimes doing it and apologizing is better because otherwise you'll be wasting time. That's the philosophy of every jaywalker in manhattan. Though you'll be lucky to get an apology rather than a finger. Most likely you'll ignore them or return a finger(or just a finger regardless).

But at least a line is moving. Sometimes at my school, Id witness students hanging out at the doorways into classes, and the most theyd do is squeeze up against the wall, expecting you to slither past them somehow. One person isnt a problem obviously, but a group of 3 or more obviously constricts the entrance, and they dont move...just squish up against the wall.

Worst would be they neither make space, nor really pay attention to the fact you're trying to pass. Then its like an obstacle course.

When you think about it though it's disturbing. All the kids are walking mindlessly to their next class. Let that sink in your head for a bit.

RE: Slow walkers

Never walked to class mindlessely. Must be why I could never always remember where I was supposed to be(as in which subject and which class). Seriously. Junior year I had to carry my schedule in my pocket the entire year because Id always forget exactly where I had to be. Senior year was a bit easier to remember since I had fewer classes and there was a sort of pattern.

Places with too many people fuck with my head. School, Walmart, what have you. Makes me more liable to take a few steps and forget what I was about to do. Maybe I'm too preoccupied with how I'm being perceived and such anxiety.

I've managed to do this when I was only enrolled in one class, which I think sort of goes full circle through stupid and becomes impressive again.

It's not a conspiracy theory but more or less a part of why we hate school-as-it-is in general: it's a sign of its factory model. The bell ringing, moving to another section, etc. It's been a part of school for a long time, and that's the purpose of it: to make us mindless.

Also, it's not much of a conspiracy that schools were modeled after Prussian schools in the 19th century, which were also modeled after factories (industrial corporations at the time made sure that the factory part of it stayed there).
