RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

How to: Get good grades without trying to hard.

It's really not all that hard to get good grades. I don't know if this applies in math, although it may, and this definitely doesn't apply if you don't give a fuck.

#1.) Pay attention. - I can usually get by without doing any work in a lot of classes just by paying attention, and occasionally writing something important down. Then, the next class period, just read the sentence or 2 you wrote down. Don't write down a lot though, not everything is critical, just write down what you surely won't remember.

#2.) You don't have to do your best. Contrary what one may think, expending brain resources tires you and makes school even worse. When doing homework, just half-ass it, and when writing essays, or doing work in class, don't try very hard. I've written passing papers that I have re-read and wondered what the fuck I was thinking. It's because I didn't give a fuck, and just half assed it.

For example:

And then Lindsey delved into the recipe and studied it rigorously so she could learn it.

vs.

Lindsey studied the recipe a lot in order to learn it so she could help her grandmother cook.

Roughly the same size, yet one took much more thought to create.

#3.) Homework. - Sometimes it's better to randomly guess on questions then to leave it blank. Some teachers may come around the classroom and check if you actually did the paper. They probably won't spend enough time on each students to realize what you have written doesn't make a shred of sense... Also, you can get shit wrong without losing to many points in some classes.

#4.) In math, even if you get a lot wrong, the teacher will usually give you a decent grade for trying. You don't have to try super hard to get everything write. As for the quizzes, good luck.

Re: How to: Get good grades without trying to hard.

I would say attendance and listening are pretty much the major ones, if you do that then even if you're lost you'll at least know what to study.

But I could never be a "consistent" student, I could either achieve very well or not at all. Also being consistent means you can't do fun things like truant.

Can't ditch here anyway. My parents WOULD find out. No way around it.

Another thing, DON'T LOSE SHIT. It's always the sole reasons my grades are shit. I'd do so well on the work, then lose it.

Yep, Cheat whenever you can as long as your not retarded enough to get caught. I cheat on test and homework ALL THE TIME.

Also, My math class is so easy. The teacher skims you paper if you did it he gives you full credit for the work. He just glances at it for a few seconds. Unless there's a huge penis across your paper you will get full credit.

Had to move on. Account is dead.

That reminds me, one kid drew either a guy with a boner or just a boner on his paper. Didn't erase it enough. It was disturbing.

Re: How to: Get good grades without trying to hard.

Bigeek OMGZ U CHEATERS!

Cheat if you find the assignment pointless and a little too time-consuming. But I don't like the idea of taking advantage of someone who actually put a lot of effort into that assignment. I just half-ass it if it's unreasonably difficult and completely useless.

As for paying attention, be a good listener. I look like the kind of student that doesn't seem to give a shit, but I hear everything my teacher says, even if it's pointless. Well, don't pay attention if the teacher just reiterates the book. But listen to their mannerisms and viewpoints; you can tell how they'll give tests and how they want you to phrase your answers (my econ teacher is conservative, so my answers must reflect capitalist views; my English teacher likes typical societal discussion, so my answers reflect everything she wanted us to interpret, etc.)

As for homework, don't sweat it. Apparently, we're expected to spend on average 10 minutes X the grade level you're in, each day. So, I'm supposed to spend 120 minutes, or 2 fucking hours after school has ended to do more schoolwork? No. Do your homework in class if the teacher lecturing is pointless, or during "free time" (it's worth not having to take books home).

I hope this is understandable, it's quite late.

Re: How to: Get good grades without trying to hard.

What I've noticed is that I tend to get better marks if I half-ass essays. I guess I'm a better student when I don't give a shit about what I'm doing!

Cheating is great wisdom.

I don't have to try at all. I have a near-photographic memory.

Wow, I already do this... Sweet. Doesn't work for the SC and HSC though.
