RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Your thoughts on truancy laws

I think the truancy laws are dumb. How can you send someone to court just because they don't want to be in school?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...152AAswy7G

http://www.dailypaul.com/278395/constitu...uancy-laws

None of these laws actually help anybody.

Yout thoughts of Truancy laws (and links).

Truancy laws are just basically there to "re-inforce" authority, and it can be quite scary. Schools don't kid around when it comes to authority (finished watching War on Kids over the weekend, by the way, a good movie).

^Damn good movie.
It kind of makes me happy when I read the comments, and seeing people agreeing, that the truancy laws are un-constitutional.

The government is here to serve the people. The people don't want it, yet they have it.

Burn it like that farmer dude in the 18(or was it 19th) century tried to do. Burn them courts, burn them police stations, burn city hall(unless the court is in city hall, then its already been burned).

Burn!Burn!BURN!!!

Well. You will not believe how many stupid laws exist and people arent aware of.

Wow, I feel kind of lucky that we don't have truancy law in Canada.

You should. You will not believe the crazy obsession we have here in the States of stopping truancy. They will not only arrest the student but also the family.

^ This.

A lot of people who are trying to improve attendance at their indoctrination camps school don't even consider why the student doesn't show up. They patronize the student and assume that they are being lazy. Then, they demand the student to show up, or else they and their family get thrown in jail.

How are there not any truancy laws in Canada, or anything similar? There's no way Canada doesn't have a compulsory schooling system...

I just found out we do have truancy laws. The school and police don't give a shit about students missing class, they have better things to do.

Exact opposite in the United States. I always wonder why they have police in the schools when security should be the very most and also those infamous "Every 15 Minutes" videos. I mean, come on, don't these guys have better things to do, like stopping a gang shooting or something? Police response is quite notoriously bad in aspects like that.

Well do they have truancy cops? I know about it because they're here in the U.S., and specifically deal with those who skip school. It's really stupid IMO, but I'm positive they exist in Canada too. I believe there's a special number I can call in my area where you can actually talk to one, and you can tell them to come over if need be.

This whole system just... *sigh* it sucks. Brickwall

Remember, all kids who cut school are SURELY, getting into violent gangs, drive-by shootings and getting coked up.

Us PC gamers are Gods of our games.

GTA on PC is not fun in my opinion. I played both VC and SA and while the game was fun, the experience wasnt.

I don't have a gaming rig, in the normal sense. I have a "ghetto" style desktop put together, and a netbook that probably won't live very long due to the intense pressure I'm putting on the hardware playing all sorts of games on it(It needs to be continually hooked up to charge because the battery can't hold it, and it needs a USB-powered fan to help cool it during use. Also missing the down arrow key, though it still works.)

CRT monitor? 'Cause I'm forced to use a crappyish notebook and I always connect that to my big ol' CRT.

Nah. Just use standard monitor, as long as it keeps working.

My desktop should be working, though I may have messed up putting in new motherbord & processor because nothing comes up on screen when I plug the desktop into the monitor.

Even then, I have about 50Gb of video games to transfer from the laptop(because trying to install them would be a bitch and somewhat unreliable).
