RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

School snobs

There is a certain group I loathe the most. Maybe even more than the bullies, maybe more than the fashion snobs that look down at you if you're not mainstream. I think you know who I'm talking about.

I'm talking about the people that love to tell you that school is really important for you. I'm talking about the people that say that if you miss school, you're missing out on a lot. I'm talking about people who think you're an idiot if you're truant. I'm talking about, yes, school snobs.

I notice that they're in general like this. They may not share all these features, but whatever:
*Have good grades
*Homework first, everything else later
*Strict parents
*Love thinking they're somehow superior because of their good grades
*Brainwashed to think school is a good thing
*Always acting like a goody two shoes

Perhaps one of my worst encounters with these "school snobs", once, in (guess what) middle school, I was complaining that our break wasn't coming soon enough, bored as hell in class. Sitting next to a school snob, she was quick to tell me "stop complaining about school" and actually called me "lazy". Well, if I don't like being in a place that's boring as hell and where all my rights are suppressed, then sorry. That makes me somehow lazy.

It seems to me that there is an scary number of students like that, at least at my school. I think my particular school is beginning to succeed at brainwashing their students. IE: Just yesterday, a debate was brought up about our city's curfew law. It scared me that in a class of about 25 students, about maybe 17-18 were not only in FAVOR of curfew, but wanted to make it earlier. (It's currently set to 11pm)

I pity them. They're going to grow up and realize that they wasted their entire childhood.

I've meet that criteria at one point, excluding the strict parents. Oddly enough I was like this before I was in 5th grade. I believe it was my friend Morgan who mentioned the redundancy of the AR system, which would reward students if they read and took a test on the books. Afterwards, I started to question, and well I ended up here.

I never said that people who have good grades are snobs, I was pointing out rather a specific group of people, and they don't necessarily just have good grades.

My school was full of these fuckers. I had to get out of there, because they creeped me out as much as they pissed me off.

Those with high grades weren't really snobs in my class, but they were pretty short-sighted and so attached to the school system. And teachers/admins did tend to give them privileges. I did pretty good too, but being the independent individualist I was, I tended to disagree and not accept the privileges. Easy doesn't taste good.

Being the quiet kid in class also had advantages.
  • Teachers like you because you aren't disruptive
  • If a kid says you cheated on a test, the teacher will believe them over you...even if they are that kid that sits at the back, has 0% in every class (even gym), and always disrupts the teacher a minimum of 50 times every day.
  • Teachers don't listen to you
  • Teachers don't ask you if you need help on anything...especially when you do because you can't understand what the rules for the project/essay are telling you to do/look up
  • The teacher is a fucking bitch to everyone except for you...even though you have trouble understanding what it is you are supposed to do.

God, I hated most of my teachers because of these things. My teachers liked the dicks because they were the ones that were on sports teams, they especially got special treatment when the teacher was their coach. Although, I never saw them blatantly giving special treatment (I.E. Changing an F to a D so they could stay on the team) and it was mostly limited to letting them be disruptive dicks.

The only real snobby types I remember were in the earlier years, when I was somewhat like them. In the later years, they were more like average kids who didn't know anything but to trust the system.

I remember these two twin girls that I used to go to school with that were like that, they'd think you were the worst person in the world if you missed a day of class or looked at a teacher the wrong way. Kinda ridiculous but oh well.
