RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

"Maturity" kills creativity (to an extent)

This is my opinion.

"Maturity" kills creativity. When we are growing up, we are always told to "grow up", that we are "going through a stage" and that "in the next few years you will not think the same". We are all told, inevitably, to be like our parents, other adults around us. We are all told to participate in the society that exists today, a society which one may argue a quite un-creative and boring society. I'd say that at times certain norms are forced upon us against our will, like school.

I'm not saying maturing is a bad thing at all. Indeed, during teen years, it is a time of growing up and learning lessons. It is the time when you have freedom (to a certain extent), and remember with freedom comes problems and lessons with it. Whatever we do may have a repercussion. But what we think as a child, the ideas and stories we have, all those fun things, when we enter middle school, we're told to think that those things are "immature" and are a "stage". Essentially, our creativity dies off, and we're told to think the same ideas as our adult peers. This has a huge negative affect though. Take a look at this study:
http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2012/05/...t-of-kids/

95% of second graders answered yes, they were creative, but only 5% of high schoolers answered yes. What is killing this creativity?

The answer is what is perceived to be "mature". I'm 16 but I still love the heck out of children's cartoons, as an example. However, unfortunately, it seems society likes to view diehards of cartoons, video games, etc as "immature" or even "creeps" or "perverts". It's sad, because in reality these are people who share a certain passion and refuse to accept social norms imposed on them. I love to day dream about fantasies about video game characters and cartoon characters in these weird environments they're not likely to be in, but I'm certain that if I told many people at my high school those fantasies, I'm certain they'd call me a "retard" or would tell me to "grow up".

I shall make my point again, I am not saying it is bad to learn manners, and other life lessons associated with maturing as a teenager. What I am saying is, if we like something outside the social norm, we may be called "immature", "gay", or "retarded". We, as humans, don't like to be called that, and therefore, cognitive dissonance develops. We start to hate what we liked simply because it has been tarnished by either of those 3 words. We are told that what we like is a bad thing, and therefore, become part of a larger crowd that is un-creative. I think it is these reasons why society is going down the toilet when it comes to creativity. Social norms are forced upon us, and if we don't accept it, we'll simply be called "immature", "gay", or "retarded".

My favorite character in this matter is Shawn Spencer from Psych. His character is immature and childish, yet trumps the "adults" because of the lack of such rigid thinking. And it's a funny show.

I've found that the perfect solution for me is to be the bear. Soft and fuzzy(kind), but more than willing to tear your skull off with my claws if you annoy me. So while I may relish in my "childish" creativity, I'm still adult-sized and not shy of getting bloody. Some of my daydream creativity(and "pretend plays") involve action-packed slaughter(maybe cliched in the sense I'm always the good guy XD). It's also good physical exercise. I basically do stretches and aerobics Razz

RE: "Maturity" kills creativity (to an extent)

I don't think it is maturity itself, rather people's view of maturity. People think someone who does what they are told, doesn't question much, goes by the book etc. is a mature person. That is the modern pereception of maturity. However they are not mature, they are tame. The fire and life snuffed out of them.

To me mature is a vague term that means little.

Maturity...
I think as long as I can take of myself and eventually take care of a family, I couldn't care less what you think of me being into video games and kid programs. It's all just a fad; who knows, maybe our generation will popularize the successful adult who rigorously still plays video games an what not.

I thought he did. Just horribly and with no license.

Plus, he also has a job and a house.

Perhaps it's this same impulse that drives people in some circles to be less conscious of the world around them and to be more concerned about themselves. And I'm sure industrialists love both of these conundrums, more or less.

This ties in with something I think benefits those who learn it: don't fret over what people think. Not all the time. Maybe for your significant other or for a job interview, but not for everyone you might meet on the internet.

If you search Elliot Hulse's youtube channel for a video called "Immaturity means making no mistakes" you could hear a new view on maturity

I guessed where the video was going a bit before he got to the point and I can agree with it. Becoming who you are is pretty important, and mistakes happen. Failure is a learning experience, as well.

Not so sure about some of the other videos though. "Women are a waste of time"? Eeehhh...

Even I don't agree with everything he talks about, but another video I suggest is "Dangerous Journey of Following your Heart"

RE: "Maturity" kills creativity (to an extent)

Interesting that people would feel that you are immature Hansgrohe for daydreaming about video game characters in situations they wouldn't normally be in. That's something you can use as your source of inspiration to create video game mods, if you wanted to. And, well, it's no coincidence that video game modders often end up making video games professionally.

Indeed, it's no secret that school is killing creativity. People with the potential to create something truly unique get snuffed out by the system before they even reach middle school. School would be so much more effective if creativity were cultured early on, but I guess society needs everybody to grow up to be mature, obedient clones eh?

Who am I? Who are YOU?

I just saw the title in the related videos section. I had other (and probably better) things to do than potentially get myself into yet more self-important dudebro shit (witnessed enough to know it's not really worth my time).
