RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Parents are ugh (rant, not school related)

Not sure if there's a different section for these type of rants. Oh well. Not school related, but a rant it is.

My mom is very... conceited? Ignorant? Not sure what the right word is. Anyways, I'll explain this from the very beginning.

Both sides of my family are not at good terms with each other. When my dad's side came to the US from Vietnam (I'm Vietnamese), my mom was angered because it cost a lot of money to move only half a dozen of people. My dad agrued with her that he was ok with having her family of over TWO DOZEN move to the US and whatnot. But yea, they're STILL NOT OVER THAT AFTER ABOUT 5 YEARS. SERIOUSLY. Anyways, they were in an agrument today about something stupid: who is right. I don't know the full story, but my mom claims that my dad would never accept the truth. I don't believe this since I wasn't there at the time of the agrument, but I'm pretty sure it's 90% bullshit. I have to hear both sides of the story, but for now let's just assume that they got into a pointless agrument about something stupid.

So, you guys didn't really have to understand that part, since I know I probably did a terrible job at explaining my family feud. But this part is the meat of the rant.

We were on our way to eating supper, my dad was driver, I was shotgun, and my mom and sister was passenger. Literally, less than 5 minutes on our way, my mom wanted off the car. It's around 7 P.M. at the time of writing this. She's crazy. Who in the right fucking mind would go out at this time as a FUCKING WOMAN. She even insisted on WALKING HER ASS HOME from where we were. Now, personally, I object to this, but the problem is, is that she said it in front of the whole family.

My sister is only in the 6th grade. 11 fucking years old. Why the hell would my mom say, "I want off this car, I'll walk it from here." Jesus fucking christ, you are showing your child that you are weak and probably not even able to handle us if you don't want to have a fucking dinner with your husband who I know you hate atm. Seriously, grow the fuck up mom.

Anyways, my dad stopped my mom from walking cause it'd literally take her about 45 minutes to walk home, hell she probably doesn't even know the way. So, we get home and she immediately hops off the car. Disappears in less than a second. We started backing up and were about to go eat dinner, but of course my mom disappeared. My first thought was that she was laying behind the car to suicide while we were backing up, but turns out she just ran off somewhere. Jesus fucking christ, running away from your own problems, how weak can you get? My dad told me and my sister to go in the house and grab snacks while he looks for my mom. So here I am, on the forums.

Jesus, I love my mom and all, but seriously, she needs to grow the fuck up and face reality. Why the fuck would you want to run away from your own family? To run away from shame? Is she still a fucking teenager? I think of running away, but after about 10 minutes of thought, I conclude that it'd be fucking stupid to run away unless I'm being abused or some shit.

God damn, why can't my mom just spend the next 2 hours with the family to eat fucking dinner. Fuck, my mom is so god damn stupid sometimes, use fucking logic before doing shit.

And now my dad, he's not that great either. But he's the reason the family is still together. If it weren't for him, my mom would probably be gone due to rage about money. And it's fucking funny, because my dad makes more money than my mom and LENDS HER SIDE OF THE FAMILY MONEY EVERY GOD DAMN TIME. And when my dad needs some money, my mom automatically think he's a fucking freeloader. Fucking christ. I hate my family. Why can't they just grow the fuck up and not give a fuck about who borrows who's money, as long as they moderate themselves, which my dad CAN'T do because my mom's side always demands money for taxes which I totally get. But some times they use it on a fucking TV, or some iPad shit.

Fuck, rant over. Still mad as fuck at my mom's logic and reasoning.

And sorry for cussing, just super mad.

1. The whole "It's around 7 P.M. at the time of writing this. She's crazy. Who in the right fucking mind would go out at this time as a FUCKING WOMAN. She even insisted on WALKING HER ASS HOME from where we were." is really sexist. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she can't walk home alone.

2. She sounds like a teenager.

3. She will learn her lesson once all of her friends and family stop talking to her completely.

1. Well, she's in her 40's, and she has had a history for massive headaches/seizures. So it's not her sex I'm worried about, it's her overall health.

2. See 1.

3. Please elaborate?

Anyways, after sending her a handful of texts, it seems like she walked to a nearby CVS and fainted. She's at the hospital right now, and my dad is on his way to the hospital.

But yea, I guess I'm pretty stupid myself.

Sexist? No. Women are perceived as physically weaker and areDEFINITLEY more likely to get raped. His (her?) point was that it is especially dangerous for her to be out alone at night. Not as many people are willing to bother/fight/rape a full grown man.

Parents are ugh (rant, not school related)

My parents once had a bunch of foolish arguments.

I then told them they acted like immature little kids, pointing out specific examples with laughter, and they teamed up, making me the bad guy. At least it fixed the problem, and I didn't care too much. I just laughed, again...

(Hello by the way)

Parents are ugh (rant, not school related)

My parents once nearly broke up over whether to make a sandwich with French or Italian bread. I am not exaggerating.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

They should have argued in the language of the bread. One side in French, other side Italian. You could be the moderator who decides. Razz

My parents usually fight me, but the closest thing they've had to a fight between themselves is the time my dad got pissed because my mom didn't pay the electric bill.

Other than that, I've been blessed with a stable family mechanic. Rather, cursed, considering both parental units are equally opposed to homeschooling, and neither will permit my opposition to the public school system.
