RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Moar Ramblings <Ramblings of Red>

Last week, there was a parent/teacher conference, and my mom went to see my English teacher. Luckily, she didn't like her much, but remains adamant that I need to get on her good side. I resisted the urge to say 'what good side' because it is extremely hard to tell when my mother is in a humor-able mood, and generally safest to never make any jokes with her around.

After she got home, she told me that there was a new 'rule' going into place (just for me): every missing or late assignment results in me not being able to use either my laptop or my (school-issued) iPad for (non-academic purposes for) 2 days. The iPad is super-restricted (no appstore), so that's not much of a loss, but my laptop is my life. It contains my entertainment (though I do love a good book), communication, and probably 95% of my education, not to mention everything I've ever done worth any attention (aspiring programmer here).

Now, I bought this laptop for $200 on black friday 3 years ago. Even then, it was not exactly top-of-the-line, and so now it's a quadruply-obsolete, overheating, loud, slow, falling-apart monster. Even with it, I can't really do much on it, and my parents have very little right to take what is really the only thing I rightfully own. This thing cost me $200 when I was 11, so I rarely have much money at all. This resulted in me taking up virtual hobbies that were free, as opposed to material ones that required money.

This leads me to my older brother. He is, in short (pardon the language), an asshole. He has some kind of mental issues, so I don't really blame him, but I think he feeds on conflict. He will instantly disagree with anything that I say, and stuck with his point to the death. He will never admit being wrong or apologize, but will argue his point long after it has been proven wrong. In addition, after the original person gives up trying to argue with him, he'll bring it back up as if trying to save a dying argument. He takes this so far that he once convinced my dad that the RJ-45 ethernet ports on the back of our router were USB ports. My dad now knows that he is an asshole, and will, for the most part defend the person against the older brother. My mother, on the other hand, knows he has mental issues, and feels bad for him when my dad is punishing my older brother. In the end, this causes an argument between my mom & dad, and ends up making half the household (dad+mom+brother) mad, while the other half hides in their rooms. As of recent, I've tried to be really nice to him, and I think it works, but then he turns on me. And ends up with the whole half-n-half situation again.

So I'm back to avoiding society again, down in my room, computing, until my laptop gets taken again and I will sit here in my chair listening to country music.

In other news, I failed that essay because it wasn't in times new roman, and I don't know quite how to tell her that it doesn't need to be. Suggestions?

Also, I used to be in a few Gifted/Talented classes. They said that I was there because it needed to be more challenging. However, if it's ever challenging, the teacher is clearly not doing their job right. If we needed to be challenged and learn everything, we could just look at wikipedia articles. (Actually, the how the teachers are supposed to work is at simple.wikipedia.org) It;s their job to make it easier to learn. Just tell me the crap, let me memorize it, and get on with it.

So, due to the new rule, and my 5 late/2 missing assignments, I was in the absence of a computer for the last few days. I am typing this on my iPad, while doing 'math homework'. Apologies for the lack of activity, and I'll try to do some forum-browsing now.

RE: Moar Ramblings <Ramblings of Red>

Thanks for the hug SoulRiser! I used Courier New, which is, in my opinion, the best that is available on most platforms.

I had my laptop back for 4-ish hours before it was removed from my room again. Apparently I'm failing Government too. I was complaining about having nothing to to, so my dad made me wax our camper, which, in my boredom, I estimated to be about 650 square feet. It took me about 3 hours, and after that I went to my room and listened to sad country music for a while. Since my computer was my main timekeeper, I used the number of songs to estimate time passage, where each song averages 3 minutes. We went out to eat at McDonald's on friday night, presumably because he didn't trust me not to seek out my laptop. I contemplated telling someone that my laptop was stolen, because Webster's definition fits perfectly with what happened to it. Unfortunately, I'm not very bold, and I trashed the idea. In all, I did nothing that was important to me personally, and that made me pretty depressed. I feel like the few hours that I had that weren't dominated by school were wasted. So, tomorrow I go back to hell, to waste another 8 hours of my childhood, and will probably spend another 3 or 4 on homework/extra credit, which will leave me 12-ish hours to sleep. There's no telling when I might get my laptop back.

I might make a post about this in homework help, but there has been an interesting site called Wolfram|Alpha that I use on my homework a lot. You can pretty much type in anything, and it'll tell you about it, solve it, etc. It cam be found at wolframalpha.com (I don't know how to make a link from the mobile version), and I think I've used it since 2007. It recently split into free and pro versions, and I think the "show work" option only works on pro, which costs money, but it's still useful.

*sigh*

This has been a test of the emergency pointless argument system. Had this been a real pointless argument, someone would have been called a facist.

I could, but I read the (school-specific) license and it specifically prohibits jailbreaking it. As much as I hate the current school system, I still have a little respect for the legal system. They are taking them over Thanksgiving break to do "software updates". The rumor is that they are going to update iOS and take off iMessage. Noo

Courier New is much more legible to me than Times New Roman anyway. Razz

What do you use to listen to music? Just regular mp3 player without any fancy OS or anything?
