RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hello!

Hi there,

My name is Joseph. I am 17 years old. I am currently a junior in high school. (bleh) I recently this year started having a lot of mixed emotions regarding school and life in general. I found this website as a result of searching "school sucks". =P

I tend to be a very open minded person. I do love education and believe it is necessary (if you are willing to learn it and be educated properly). I do not believe that the current structuring and form of academic and schooling systems set-up by governments is correct. I think there are better ways of educating people (specifically youth).

I am very familiar with the internet and computers. I once believed at one point I would have a career in computer science or a computer field but since then I have changed my mind. I now hope to attend college in the future and obtain a major in English and Philosophy. I hope to one day be able to start organization that helps people with problems and address the issues in society. (Environmental issues, poverty, natural disasters, etc...)

Anyhow, that's just the start. I should probably get back to doing my homework. I am pretty much willing to answer most questions so just ask. =P

Joseph W.

TL;DR: My name is Joe. I'm new (and awesome). What's up? =P

Re: Hello!

Welcome to the SS forums. Straitjacket fitting is in Room 204. Stay away from certain "chairs", Uncle Zherny, and Raikuron's bitching, and you should be just fine.

Re: Hello!

You have the same name as my little brother, so you can call be 'Big Sis' or Mori, even if you ARE older than me.
Ignore Raikuron, he is technically unofficially banned from greeting newbies~

Re: Hello!

Haha, thanks for the welcomes. =P

I can do a lot of things. I can run, write, stuff like that. =P I know how to write HTML, CSS, and some PHP and SQL. Used to know more coding languages but it's been a long time since I have written much besides the codes I mentioned.

Re: Hello!

Coding was always too confusing to me. One day I might get into it, who knows? Never really tried that hard, come to think of it.

Re: Hello!

Yeah, it just kind of makes sense to me. I have been coding and involved with computers (using software and coding) since I was 12. I hope in the near future to be able to set-up a blog on my website to create postings regarding my thoughts on issues and various topics of life. Though, in the mean time, I will just post here. =P

Re: Hello!

PHP is way more fun and easy to learn if you approach it via inspecting already-written code. I used to look at forum scripts and all that and I learnt a fair bit.

Re: Hello!

Yeah, I have found looking at code and interpreting it makes things a lot easier to understand. That is basically how I have learned what I know so far. Kind of a lame approach, but I have just been learning what I need to know to make my website and ideas function properly. If time comes and I am willing to put my full energy into it, I may trying learning as much of the language as possible.

Thank for the welcome. I hope I will fit in here. Just by kind of reading over past topics I can tell that this is a good forum. Most of the people here seem understanding and intelligent enough to either provide their own opinions and facts whether it be to support someone or have a debate regarding an issue. I hope to soon be able to help other members and provide my own input on topics as well as starting some new topics of discussion. =)
