RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Information Help needed with English final essay

Instead of an exam in English, we're having an essay on the last novel we read, the Crucible. Needs to be 5 paragraphs, 3 full pages at least in MLA format. With 2 citations from the novel. It's due in two days. I have a thesis statement, I just need some help with the 3 body paragraphs.

My topic is "how miller crafts each character to contribute to the building hysteria of the witch trials"

My thesis: "The characters Danforth, Abigail, and elizabeth feed the hungry flames of the crucible that heats the witch trials. The fuel that these characters add to the flames is composed of logic, denial, hatred, jealousy, and fear."

I can change the characters I do the essay on, but in each paragraph I need to explain how Danforth, Abigail, and elizabeth add to the hysteria of the witch trials. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: whether I pass or fail the class depends solely on this essay. I really need to do good on this.

RE: Help needed with English final essay

You had to read The Crucible? You poor, poor soul.

If you're reading this, I killed myself.

I didn't read anything, sparknotes was used to pass the reading quizzes. I'd come in late and she'd tell me to go to the lunchroom to do it because the rest of the class was done, then I'd get on my phone and read sparknotes while taking the quiz. We watched a movie version of the novel as well, and it was actually somewhat decent.

I have no knowledge of what "The Crucibal" is about so may no be of great help...

o Take notes of the characters' traits (e.g. brave, fearful, feminine, etc.)
o Take note of if these traits can be linked to the definition of hysteria or not, and why
o Take note of how these traits affected the character's behavior during the witch trials
o Take not of how one character's traits clash/relate with/to another's
o Read through the section (not intensely) about the witch trials and take note, one character at a time, of:
- The setting
- The atmosphere of each character before the witch trials
o Write down each character's point of view (are they opposed to witchcraft, are they in favour of witchcraft do they believe in witchcraft, is one of the people on trial related to them, etc) and how this affects how they feel during the trials. So perspective = certain emotion = cause of action (spoken or otherwise) = reactor (hysteria). Does that make sense?
o Think outside the box... teachers love originality. Just don't go off topic.

If the book and sparknotes were written in old English, use Google to quickly translate anything you don't understand.
