RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

RE: Why hate on NYRA?

A.) This thread is old as shit and I made it back when we were arguing over tactics and NYRA's executive director alex came over and jumped in on the derbate in another old thread...

B.) NYRA has changed a lot mang. and I haven't looked into it in a while.

Still, what alternatives do you have? Nobody's given the EFO any money except me and one other guy... You could donate to like, SDS or some shit I guess. It's not like we have a plethora of competent organizations fighting for youth rights or anything.

Why hate on NYRA?

I simply wonder why there aren't many official organizations fighting for the rights minors should have, not already have.

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

Why hate on NYRA?

There are SO many alternatives to NYRA that NYRA looks like a needle in a hay stack. Plus, almost every state and territory has a Childrens health and safety committee, group, or counsel that are soley for that purpose. Any organization that gets into the homes and communities and helps kids IS a youth rights organization; CPS, teaching, MSF (doctors w/out borders), YMCA, Runaway homes, Rehab centers for youth, so many organizations are actually doing something to help young people. Thats how that legislation was passed in Delaware that banned violence against children in the home, they actually DO things in the community with legislation and activism to make a difference. we (yr activists) represent the largest and most diverse demographic in HISTORY. Youth rights is unlike any other movement, its a world movement unlike black civil rights in the U.S. or western feminism. NYRA is an organization (mostly internet) run like a rich frat house where your money is THEIR money, never again will i fall for another pitch like them where im helping THEM put money into their pockets, and not the children who need help the most.

RE: Why hate on NYRA?

My problem with NYRA is that they go for the big stuff first, drinking age, end school, ETC, when the key is to have small stuff that lots of people will agree on and work up. The labor movement didn't start out with big strikes for the 8 hour day, they started with small things, like safer conditions, and worked up. NYRA needs to get credit as a force that will help you and build up, while always having the ultimate goal, it should also link with other movements with intersecting goals

Why hate on NYRA?

drinking, i dont think thatss a serious issue, sorry, abuse in the home, lost of monetary assets to parents, right to leave school at will (especially hs) are big issues. NYRA doesn't cover anything of importance. And the labor movement was a totally different story, they did actually tackle big issues first, like the civil rights movement, the womens movement, gay rights movement (could you imagine the civil rights movement NAACP/N.O.W. starting with "we want to eat hambuargers!" they would have been laughed at, like NYRA. Now is the time to act, not later when its not 'too controversial' controvery creates movement, and that creates change. We don't need someone collecting money then not speaking about the issues affecting us the most.

Why hate on NYRA?

The YR movement is very small, mainly because kids either feel powerless or are scared of trouble. NYRA is trying to make kids just end school full stop, thats not gonna work, you need to keep the big demand but still fight for smaller stuff at first. So allot of kids want cheaper lunch, so your organize that, as kids feel their collective power they move on to bigger stuff, each victory adds more people to your group, and this continues until you have a whole army behind you.
