RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Tutor time

So because I got a 69 on my Chem exam (never mind the 97 I got in English, 95 in History, and nothing else below a B) my parents are making me get a tutor for the subject. YAY MORE AFTERNOONS WASTED. Biggrin I think that making me really immerse myself in the subject I loathe, abhor and despise (see how good I am at English?) will be really, really, good for me.

I really did try to study. I just can't comprehend the material in that subject, or I never write enough about something. Because the entire time I'm thinking how utterly USELESS it is.

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

RE: Tutor time

I know a bit on chemistry. You can PM me if you want or you can use Khan Academy's section on the subject (http://www.khanacademy.org/#chemistry)

Previously known as Derchin.

Thanks, that should come in handy, although I'll have to wait till school starts to find out exactly what sort of chemistry I'll be bombarded with.

Um? Chemistry is not math hard, or at least that's I know.
Look, physics = math.

RE: Tutor time

I do physics now and to be honest the math isn't hard at all. And there's a lot of chemistry involved in physics.
For physics class I just passed the Nuclear Physics + Nuclear Chemistry test.
If you need help, especially with nuclear chemistry I can be of assistance Biggrin

That's stupid, a 69 isn't a bad score at all!

I barely understood that.

Chemistry has conversion(x-y) measuring with beakers, flasks, and test tubes. Anything relating to science has math. I really hope you are a troll and not clinically retarded.

OOOH THIS IS SO AWESOME

I just heard my dad on the phone with my mom, talking about the fact that this "book project" is eclipsing the "problem" with my grades (really only Chemistry, the others are fine) and discussing plans for "making it clear" that school work comes first.

I don't know if this means shutting down my internet, or my email, so I can't get in touch with any more agents. I never really had any hope of getting noticed by an agent but if my dad does this he erases any hope at all of me getting published.

RE: Tutor time

Yeah, it's fucked up that people think you should only put time into the things you suck at. WTF that's backwards.

That is fucked up. You are doing something real and something with actual worth and they will shut it down if it interrupts with school work. Which is mainly bullshit and just busy work. Not to mention like you said you are actually doing fine.

RE: Tutor time

I don't think there's any reason to take it sitting down. You're in the right, you know it's crucial to your future to be immersed in the things you enjoy and explore them. The ways it can benefit you both mentally and in terms of career choices are numerous.

Convince your parents that's the case. Granted, while it's worthy of your effort to try hard to make them see things as you do, if that doesn't work simply rebel. Politely tell the teacher you won't be requiring his services and resume whatever book project you had.
