RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

RAGE RAGE RAGE I feel so bad for my cousin.
So I was helping my cousin with her homework.
She is in 2nd grade.
HOLY FUCK SHE GETS SO MUCH HOMEWORK!
Her mom told me that she gets that much every week!
FUCK!
God I was getting enraged for her.
If I was ever forced to send my kids to school OMG I would have went off on the teacher.
No wonder kids hate reading, writing, math FUCK!
Here is her homework for the week:
Quote:They get six words to *learn*
They have to write each word five times (wut?)
They have to lengthen each word (adding "ing" or "er")
They have to take words out of each word.
They have to write each word in a sentence.
They have to write an antonym, synonym, and rhyme for each word.
Then they have to read 30 mins each night.
Then they have t read a whole book and write about the plot, setting, characters, and how the problem was solved.
Then they have to do two worksheets of math.
Then they have to do two worksheets where they read a story and answer the questions.
Then they have to do social studies which could mean anything from reading to writing way too much.
Then they have to write a journal entry for three days of the week. Each entry has to be half a page long.
I don't get that much work (relative to my level of knowledge and skill) in fucking college!
Holy fuck holy fuck I am raging so hard.
No wonder kids hate learning and it is starting earlier every year.
You should hear her rage to me. Since I am the only one she can rage to and I will agree with her. She has some colorful words for her teacher and homework as do I.
She's fucking SEVEN! She should be having fun and dicking around and learning that way!

RE: RAGE RAGE RAGE I feel so bad for my cousin.
And like...her mom and our older cousins are like, "der that is easy she should finish it quick" Yeah just because it is easy for YOU does not mean it is easy for a kid who is just learning it and learning it in the worst way possible.
It'd be like an engineer mocking new engineer majors for not getting calculus easily.

Umm.. still nope. 1-4 grades are the most important ones where you learn the most useful things. Reading, writing, Arithmecy (basic).. etc.
Although the rhyme thing is stupid

RE: RAGE RAGE RAGE I feel so bad for my cousin.
So what? 2 hours on computer wasted on learning SOMETHING useful. Is it bad? I had to solve three math sheets, write every single letter 100 times, both in standart and cursive.

bullshit I waste 7-15 (school/no school) hours on a computer every day that could be used for something useful and I don't seem to feel like doing anything else. It's at least as bad as school for draining my time, if it's the computer-being-evil-addiction-drug and not just me or depression/low self esteem or something.
I got a fraction of that amount of homework... maybe 30%? it does seem pretty stupid. fassdgds

Pff you didn't get the idea.. yet.
Do you want your cousin to be illiterate? Second grade is not not only easy as fuck, IT IS USEFUL. Not to mention this is not a lot of homework
1+2 = 3
3 + 5 = 8
homework solved

Bulgvar, if you are going to argue pro-schooling, use evidence and actual arguments to support your claims.

I'm being pro - literacy, not pro - school. Grade 2 teaches you to write, read and do basic calculations.

Seems like it's a bit stupid, just a bit. Some of the repeated stuff (write about the book + journal entry + whatever the fuck), just, blargh

I learned to read and write when I was 4. School doesn't teach that shit very well if at all. Literacy rates are absolute shit. In kindergarten everyone acted like I'm some genius because I could supposedly read at a 3rd grade level. I wasn't a genius though, I could just read a sentence without stuttering. Even in high school, half the kids in my class still can't read fluently. School does a shit job of teaching kids this stuff. At this day in age its not even hard to read and write. You could probably learn that if you spend some time at the library.

This. They always stop all the time in the middle of a sentence. Only like a third of us can read at least a full three sentences without getting hung up on words.

RE: RAGE RAGE RAGE I feel so bad for my cousin.
The beginning sounded ok but then it got excessive, for me school seemed useful for memorising words and their spelling. At one point in school I was accidentally doing extra homework, which included writing out words a million times in sentences and all that crap, and my spelling skills were the best of the class.

Holy shit, Albanian that sucks for your cousin. And it's stupid and unnecessary garbage that she has to do all that.
As for the whole Bulgvar situation. We need to quarantine Bulgaria immediately.

No really, he has to read a small packet and do a worksheet 3 times a week. What the fuck is going on at your cousins school?

Teach your cousin the middle finger for next time she goes in that school
Make her realize how unimportant school is and tell her to live a happy life.

I learned to read and write on my own, by the time I got to second grade I was ahead of the shit we were "learning" because I'm not fucking retarded and school is.
