RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What would you change?

I have been wondering what you would do to change your career in school and how would that benefit you. You can do it by school or pick one and focus on that. I will be doing Middle and HS for this thread.

MS:
- Transfer to the other middle school
- Kick field goals for this school
- Do basketball, wrestling, track and football here
- Do club swimming at the local pool
- Get into advanced math
- Do band/choir more
- Get gold medals

Why it benefits:
- I really hated MS. Going to another one would get me involved in school, gotten a better GPA and most certainty fueled the rivalry between each school. The AVID program there is WAY more superior than the one here. They make you take advanced courses which I would gladly take and be surrounded by intelligent people. Also, kicking field goals can secure me a spot on the varsity football team as a freshman if I choose to go out for it. If I could drill a 40-50 yarder against my old school, I would had done that. Band would help me stay out of trouble. But I could probably have only 2 electives so it would had been a tough choice. Most likely would had done Band/AVID,Band/Choir but not Choir/AVID. I would see if I could get into advanced classes without AVID but if I don't then I would take choir, try out for freshman band and go for Men's Ensemble (advanced choir) as a freshman. So pretty much changing here impacts alot of things when I move up.

What to change about HS:
- Staying on ASB. Gets you presidency, homecoming court as a junior, and gets you the advantage when we play games at the assemblies. Can change homecoming court rules, lobby against the status quo.
- DECA/FBLA as a freshman. Gets you into nationals later, looks good on a resume, can develop skills, stands out with colleges and employment.
- Swimming as a frosh. Gets you into state, scholarship, etc. 4 year letterman. Kicking butt as a freshman.
- Running Start. Enroll in college as a junior, get AA before graduation, transfer to 4 year school, look attractive to recruiters and colleges since clock rule does not get used up.
- 12 sport varsity. Very few can get 12 letters. Only guy to do so. Our QB could only get 8 for his whole career. I wound up getting 6 (3 track,2 swimming, 1 XC) Him (3 Football,3 track,2 basketball). Shows accomplishment and pride for school.
- Better GPA. Shows I can do stuff. Resolves conflict. Used for wisdom.

There is plenty of more but I will talk about it and see where we go here.

Like, if I could go back in time? I wouldn't have gone to school at all.

RE: What would you change?

You mean not going? Not going to school would be better for almost everyone. The only ones it wouldn't be better for are people whose parents are disgustingly abusive to the point that the school day is a cherished break for them.

If I hadn't gone to school, I would have been free to follow my curiosity and I would have learned more and done more. I can't predict what I would have done, but I know it could have been more, and there's no way it could have been less, because I didn't learn .anything. in school.
