RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Your opinion: metaphor video

I know it seems like a lot to ask, but from what I grasped, you guys are not against learning at all but more against the school system and it’s conventions.
I’m trying to do some informative and yet not too boring “teaching” on youtube. If you could tell me what you think?

(For what it’s worth, I wish my lessons were that concise.)

RE: Your opinion: metaphor video

lol I have chickens too. Your video was more interesting than how my teachers taught me the difference between simile/metaphor.

Anyway yes, I can safely say most of us hear are pro-learning. I love learning. Just anti-educational system. Some, like me, are anti-compulsory education.

I like it. Binding in some humor at the beginning and actually teaching you. Bonus points for Shakespeare.
I love your accent to.

You know how I tell the differences between the two? I don't I just say balls to it. I now classify everything as a Semi-for. (simile-metaphor) Meaning the comparison of anything that is used a writing device. Problem solved.

Had to move on. Account is dead.

Well, it's like with many areas of expertise, I guess. There is no real reason, why we should be so specific about the stylistic device's exact nature. Other than that we can be.

I interprete literature because I like it. I like it because I'm good at it (which makes it a satisfying experience) and because I like to understand how the world works, in general.
To many people (and most of my pupils, I take it), understanding how language works isn't so important as long as we manage to communicate. I get that. Different people, different interests. My new video is about quantum mechanics. (AND metaphors. Huh, bollocks, eh?) Biggrin

Oh, I know, it's not a particularly difficult subject, isn't it? But it was fun to make and... well, if you're interested in more challenging, here comes a video about quantum mechanics (and metaphors):

I love your accent! And yeah you're right, learning is great, but learning things I don't care about and then being forced to answer questions about them is horrible.

No, this is Patrick.
