RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

What do they want you to do with that, factoring and expanding?

Wow those are some ugly little bastards aren't they? I'll work on them later tonight and post answers tomorrow. iPhone isn't great with writing out equations.

RE: Help me with my math homework!
Lol, I'd start at the bottom, distribute, and see what you can derive from there. The top seems useless until you have a little more info.
Fuck this, I'm not even going to do my own math homework let alone yours lol.

RE: Help me with my math homework!
That's pretty easy.
First, move everything from one side to the equal sign to the other.
It should look something like:
allnumbersandxsonthisside=0
Next, if you have something we call here as a ''common factor'' extract it.
It's done something like, if you have this:
(20x+50x) you can extract the x and make it like this: x(20+50). As you can see it's made much easier for logical reasons. Do that whenever you can. Once done and you have everything on one side, common factors out and such you should have x's and x's squared. The formula you have to apply I forget but just look it up. One thing I DO remember is that once you have everything on that side you should arrange it in the following way, if the case is this:
2xsquared+5x you should name the first one a and the second one b. Substitute as it says in the formula you look up, do the math and you should get two answers, one positive and one negative.
I aced that test, it's really simple.
Now you should be able to do the math. It's hard explaining over a forum so you should look it up on youtube or something.
Anyways, you're welcome!
The world is a dangerous place. Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don't do anything about it.

Maybe an example could help. This may help you with problem 1.
18 * x^2 - 18 * x * sqrt(x) - 17 * x - 8 * sqrt(x) - 2 = 0
if x = 4
18 * 4^2 - 18 * 4 * sqrt(4) - 17 * 4 - 8 * sqrt(4) - 2
18 * 4^2 - 18 * 4 * 2 - 17 * 4 - 8 * 2 - 2
18 * 16 - 18 * 4 * 2 - 17 * 4 - 8 * 2 - 2
288 - 144 - 68 - 16 - 2
288 - 144 = 144, 144 - 68 = 76, 76 - 16 = 60, 60 - 2 = 58

I'm in Trig and I have no idea what to do with that crap either. OP's teacher hates them.
I tried solving the second one, by multiplying each term in the first parenthesis with each term in the second parenthesis. Basically FOIL but with three terms. I ended up with a Quartic root, and I'm not familiar with the Quartic or Cubic formula so I stopped there. I'm guessing there's an easier way to solve it and I just overcomplicated it.

You are seriously overcomplicating it, because I understand graphing as a coordinate grid, I only used square roots, 1 square, lots of multiplacation, and some subtraction. I also did it in that order. I use PREMDAS with R standing for roots.
However, If you must know about cube roots or quadric roots or even quintatic roots, look at the power of the root. I always do roots backwards, since I don't understand how to solve the square root of 5 or anything like that without a calculator.
Examples:
Cuberoot(729)
9^3 = 729
Cuberoot(729) = 9
Quadroot(256)
4^4 = 256
Quadroot(256) = 4
Quinroot(759,375)
15^5 = 759,375
Quinroot(759,375) = 15
Yes, I did use a calculator.

I don't see how you can use that info to solve the second one, nor does my friend majoring in mathematics. We're probably just missing something.
If you showed us how to do it on the 2nd problem we'd probably understand. I'm really interested in seeing how it works out.
Who am I? Who are YOU?
