RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Jobs?

Just wondering, does anyone here know of any jobs where I can actually encourage the anti-school/alternative schooling/youth rights movement? I really think the issue of kids being forced to school when its only doing harm is a huge problem that I feel strongly about, and I was wondering if there are actually jobs that work towards the goal of making public education optional. If not, does anyone know if there are jobs in the field of psychology that just focus on depression caused by/resulting from schooling? I would like to help kids that feel depressed because they're forced to go to school.. thanks.

hey, if you find one, please let me know Rolleyes

the problem with psychology jobs is that you're actually charging people money for advice and friendship... i dunno, i just can't morally do that :( but if you do it for free, then you have to do something else for money as well anyway...

Who says you have to be employed to do something that noble? If you want to counsel kids dealing with the horrors of school then do it through a charity. There are plenty of youth centers who would welcome a psychologist to the fold, even if you are anti-school. You'll still be helping students deal with real turmoil they face every day.

yes, but then that brings up the unfortunate issue of theres-only-so-much-time-in-a-lifetime... i'd love to do all i can to help people, but the sad fact of life is i need money to survive (unless i farm, but then i need money for internet, and electricity, and all that crap)... so yeah, it makes sense to try and find something that pays which is also USEFUL and not just some stupid corporate job (most of which indirectly hurt people in general)... or win the lottery, invest that, and then just help people for free, now that would be cool Cool

be a teacher!

be a teacher, but teach the kids about freedom and revolution when the principal isn't looking.;D

I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins.
The quickest way to kill a revolution is to wait for it.

I literally have no idea on that site, prefer not to go to it. Seems to be spammy, though interesting enough the rest of the posts seem human enough.... wonder why.

RE: Jobs?

I don't think any job will support anti school however anti schoolers tend to be better at skilled trades. Working with ones hands on whatever it may be. Mechanic, chef, carpenter. Things like that.

Whilst some work diligently there are those who ask why. I am one of them

Tell me, what are you good at then?

I'm an anti-schooler but I'm not good at working with my hands either. What does that make me? A useless piece of shit probably but...yeah.

"Cognitive refugees," who don't like traditional school, have a wide range of abilities and interests.

I'm not good at working with my hands, either. Well, beyond typing. Smile

Ario, I'm sure you'll find things you're good at. Unfortunately, school tends not to be good at helping people find those things, and it can be a trial-and-error process on one's own.

What have you tried? Any ideas of what you might be good at?

And, regardless, what do you find enjoyable, or interesting?

Yeah, it looks legitimate. I think it's a link to a relevant, if localized site. Even if it's diverging from the point of the thread, that not all desirable jobs are listed on a jobs site.

(02-10-2014 06:00 PM)Gwedin Wrote:  This thread was from nine years ago...

Yeah, that's a long time. I'm glad it got bumped. It's still relevant today.

This thread was started around the time I first started posting on SS, though I don't recall seeing it. This is exactly what I've wanted to do since before then: earn a living working on (1) this transformation of education, and (2) helping specific people figure out educational and life paths.

My problem back then was, I was trying to figure these things out for myself, and I didn't have the best help in doing so. I had some of the best help here on the forums, and based on my participation here, but there were still a lot of missing pieces.

The common attitude around here over the years has been that things can't really change, and there's not much people can do, beyond finding a way out of the factory model. But for me, the bigger problem has been what to do once out, and in a position of making it in the world.

Reconciling hopes and dreams, and a desire to explore and achieve things, and the reality of just earning income while opting out of many credential-oriented career paths (psychologist, teacher), can be one tough challenge in a world that often depicts this as possible only to a lucky few.

It's also a tough challenge without important skills, like writing, speaking, thinking, and being able to understand people and communicate effectively. These are things that have taken me a long time to develop to any great extent, and a lot longer than I think is necessary. Naysayers say, that's because I failed to continue through school, but I wasn't finding these things being developed much in college, either.

I knew there had to be some other way.

And that leads to a story that's leading me to write a long, winding post. I'll wrap this part of it here, though, for readability purposes. More later, after I reflect on my draft... while I go make some money. How? With a "pay-the-bills job" which I like as a job, but which isn't this long-sought dream of earning a living transforming education and helping others figure out their alternative paths.

Jobs?

It's worth noting that the label of craftsman applies to more than just physical constructs. You could call software coding a form of craftsmanship. It's one that I've chosen to learn, at any rate. All I have to do is do it.
