RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

How are YOU fighting the war?

I know the topic is corny. Shut up.

So how are you trying to abolish compulsory education? Do you argue against your classmates saying that school is necessary, do you argue against your teachers, do you stick up posters, do you write blogs?

I come here and listen to you people and at school I wait to explode as a teacher is handing out assignments.

It hasn't happened yet, but if my self control and anger keeps going like it is it might only be a few more years.

I'm thinking about starting an anonymous zine and distributing it around the school in various locations. I also, every year, when a teacher tells me to to stand for a flag I write them a letter stating the reasons why I don't stand for the flag, and my rights not to stand for the flag. I haven't stood for the american flag in two years.

i come here, but i also try to talk to the few friends i have that might listen about this stuff. i'm sort of tied up at the moment dealing with all my personal crap with parents and school, but sometimes make some antischool grafitti in bathrooms, things like that. all the other stuff i'd have to keep in underground.

I've stood for the flag.
I just don't say the pledge. I don't see anything wrong with respecting it, but pledging your life to some inanimate object and a GOVERNMENT is stupid.
Really stupid.
Pledging your life should be reserved for gods, principles, and goals. Not to flags and governments. I don't have enough trust in a government for that.

Sitting down while everyone else stands is a silent protest. If I stand I'm still respecting it, and that's not something I'm going to do. The American flag (or any flag...) doesn't deserve any respect. Patriotism is racism.

Well with a lot of teachers you can't really Have a conversation without arguing.

I didn't know someone who threatens to call my parents, tells me to shut my mouth, orders me to 'face forwards', pounds their values into my head, etc, can be considered a person. I certainly don't consider them a person. Arguing is the only method for some of these "people". It's very rare that you can have an actual conversation with a teacher. Even if you can, theres still two very different power roles and rules you have to follow. Theres no such thing as a relaxed conversation with a teacher.

I think it would be seen as less formal if they weren't always called Mr./Mrs./Ms. Lastname. The teachers at my school get upset when I call them by their first names. It makes me kind of angry, because if I have to refer to them like that, they should have call me Mr. Mylastname.

Yeah, definitely agree with you there. All the teachers at my school refer to the students by their first name, but all hell breaks loose if we happen to do the same to them.

You're doing plenty as far as I'm concerned. I didn't even think of starting a zine until I came here and read a few things. It also gives you an outlet, knowing theres people who feel exactly the same way as you do, and being able to talk about it.

Whenever I have the chance to say something bad about school, like when we have to write an essay, I take that chance. Like if our essay topic is "did you like the book you read over the summer", I make sure I write exactly how I feel about it, like "I hate being forced to read stupid books, that makes me hate reading, blah blah blah. I come here too. And sometimes when a teacher asks a question to the class I raise my hand and say something that would make them a little mad, something about the school/class/subject. And I break school rules without anyone noticing (except a few of my friends) which is kinda pointless since no adult finds out, but it still makes me feel good. Other than that, I don't do much. I wish I could though. But my parents would kill me if I get in trouble.

True... but the site's kinda doing that all by itself now, all I do is keep it running Razz
