RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

This shouldn't surprise me considering it is the public schools, but wow what a shit load of fuck. But wait, it's "optional". Here's an excert.
Quote:It's worth noting that while this anti-truancy program is very elaborate and almost invasive, it is also entirely optional. Students and their parents are offered the chance to voluntarily participate in the "monitoring as a way to avoid continuation school or prosecution with a potential stay in juvenile hall."
On top of that, parents would also be avoiding the $2,000 fine that can come from turning a blind eye to truancy if a school district chooses to pursue the issue.
Yeah, let them monitor you or go jail/be fined. Yeah entirely optional!

Re: School uses GPS on students who skip.
I've been truant on more than one occasion, and not once has my school exercised their ability to intrude, investigate and fine my family for it. The very fact that they have that ability scares me though. Fuck them, if they start doing that shit, I don't even know what I would do.

Wow...that's fucked up. I'm glad my school doesn't do this...but they do call and ask for a conformation call back, which is annoying. >.< But it's still not as bad as being tracked...

Re: School uses GPS on students who skip.
Typical. They don't give a shit why the students are skipping, that school is a hellhole that makes them hate life most likely. They instead want to use hundreds of dollars for these devices rather than using that money to maybe, you know, improve the schools!

I'm sure happy they didn't have this a my school
I wonder why they haven't yet put rfid chips in kids' brains to ease roll call, and cameras in bathrooms to make sure nobody is smoking... That would be fun lol

You nailed it. I feel so bad about how far this has gone. I's amazing to me that school officials think that school is so valuable that kids should never be given the benefit of the doubt when they decide to do something else. I know I keep talking about when I taught I did this and that but when I taught high school, if a kid skipped I figured he or she had to take care of an emotional need. I mean, if you skip it means you didn't want to go and if you don't want to go it means your heart is pulling you somewhere else. Instead of being so aggressive about forcing these kids to attend school they should be considering why they hate it so much. Plus, you can't teach someone who really doesn't want to be there, so what's the point?
If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Re: School uses GPS on students who skip.
My parents, and many others I know, would eat this up. What was that one quote... "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive."
The worst part is, these people actually think they're doing good. They go home at night and sleep well believing this helps us.
P.S. Not sure why you guys bumped this. Guess it was lulzy a few weeks ago, and is still lulzy now.
"Oppressed people might overthrow their tyrants, but not if they can count on one day joining the oppressors."

It's worse than being pointless. That person doesn't want to be there, has a desire to do something else, and you'd have to force them to stay on task. This ties you up, meaning you can't help the people who want to be there, and actually need your help.
Freedom is never given; it is always taken. So for the fact that you're not a slave, don't thank those in authority. Thank someone with a "bad attitude."
