RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Everybody has strengths and weaknesses.

SoulRiser:
You are 100% correct. School is something society provides to serve those who benefit from it. At some point children may not be benefiting from school. Many quit before they graduate from high school. They are collectively called "dropouts" and they may or may not be successful at doing anything more than menial labor. Dropouts who are successful are generally more unusual than high school graduates who are successful.

Public Education is more than a place to pour knowledge into the heads of the next generation; it is a place to sort the haves from the have-nots.

Unfair human sufferings don't bother you... Wtf

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: Sincerely Requesting Advice

All human suffering, by definition, is unfair. Can there be such a thing as *FAIR* human suffering?

Yeah, it *ALL* bothers me...I stay awake every night worrying about it, NOT!

Life isn't fair. You didn't ask to be born, you have to find your own peace in the world, and someday you will die. Perhaps you have some alternative in mind?

Maybe the world wouldn't be so unfair if it wasn't full of self righteous, uncaring, douchebags like you.

Exactly, so let's make it worse. (Sarcasm)

Whistler Wrote:I have been somewhat disheartened (Happy for people I suppose?) that in New Jersey taking and passing the GED will net you a State-Supported High School Diploma. If that's so, why am I wasting my time in High School? I am in near all AP classes, constantly bored, consistently get Advanced Proficient on State Tests, and am very self motivated for what I want to do in life and learn. I love history and economics, writing and science. but school makes them suck, really hard. I have not spoken once to my parents about unschooling and I fear their reaction.

It's not because they are nasty people or they don't give me my own choices in life and trust me, it's just everyone hears from the media about "High School Drop Outs" and I have agreed with my parents about pursuing a higher education after High School.

What do I do? What should I do?

What do you want to do for a living is a good question to consider first.

Re: Sincerely Requesting Advice

It sounds like you'd have no problem with college and you'd do a lot better. Remind your parents that if you start college early, you'll be in a position to graduate and find a job early. Also, depending on the college you go to, you can take AP and CLEP exams to get 30 or more credits (equivalent to a year of classes.) If you're bored in AP classes now, I'm sure you could study and pass those tests. Maybe start taking them now as an example to your parents of what you can do.

What kind of college are you thinking of going to? You might have trouble getting into very selective ones without all the language, etc. courses, but there are plenty of colleges that will accept you, especially if your SAT/ACT score is good. Maybe contact some colleges, especially smaller ones, and explain your situation and see if you could be admitted immediately at your age, if you got the GED.

I got the GED when I was 17 and started at a college that accepted basically any applicant. I remember in high school how they made a huge deal about needing so many years of this and that to go to college... but you have to look at the college's requirements. I might as well have never gone to high school.
