RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Do you love your country?

I posted in the Ranting Thread in VIYH about these assholes who criticized me for not standing for the pledge. One thing that I forgot to mention and didn't mention because I didn't remember until now was one guy (namely Joe) asking me, "do you love America?"

I didn't answer him. 1. Because I don't owe him an answer and 2. because... I'm not sure.

I started this thread for 3 reasons: 1. Can somebody tell me how somebody can love their country? For example, how should one feel about their country if they truly love it?
2. Ask others if they love their country and
3. If so, why, and if not, why?

Re: Do you love your country?

you shouldn't love the country itself, you should love the ideas and principles the people live by. you value freedom and democracy and the people have that, then you should love your country. but if those ideas get corrupted, then you should stop loving it and try to make it like it used to be. the problem is that some people confuse the country itself with the country's government, and they say that you should love it out of patriotism even if the government changes for the worse. this is stupid, a country is just a piece of land and it's up to the people to make it worth loving.

Defined as the land a particular nation inhabits, people love country for the same reason they love nature -
peace, solitude, fertility, opportunity, purity, etc. etc. etc.

Re: Do you love your country?

I love the really nice places here in SA, like waterfalls and lakes and beaches and such, but I hate the politics. So it depends on your definition of "country". The land? Sure. The idiots acting like they own it? No.

I love the land. The people are...Ok I hate 90+% of the people. The laws are even worse. The government should go fall in a ditch, get bitten by a non-venomous snakes, attacked by a tiger, set on fire and then drowned.

I love this country, hate the government. It's a bit of a problem when it comes to getting libertarian policies because the fundamentals of libertarianism are, after all, letting people disagree with you if they wish.

Rebelnerd, you have a point... a couple of points, actually. I guess I don't really love America. Sure, I love the "ideal America," in which everybody does receive liberty and justice, but seeing how that isn't the case in the "real America"...

no, thats the land, the earth, countrys are another way that humanity seporates the earth into their little private "owned" places with their own rules and ways of destroying what they tok over. no one can own the earth, sure theres such a thing as territory, but countrys suck, no offense to any patriot of wherever, but i dont think i could love any country...

Re: Do you love your country?

I don't consider it "my" country, just as Northern Ireland peoples don't consider the UK their country, and as the Tibetans don't consider China their country. But still, I hate it.

Re: Do you love your country?

Oooh, that's a hard one. I'd have to say I like the country, but dislike the people that run it. How can you hate the everyman who's trying to get by in the rat race? I mean really. That's the country I love. I also love the beautiful rolling hills of my local area. The trees.

It kind of makes me sad sometimes. That people can love their government and their country or even confuse the two together.
It also makes me sad us humans are the dominant species, but that's another problem for another day.

Probably Weswammy Wrote:It kind of makes me sad sometimes. That people can love their government and their country or even confuse the two together.

That reminds me of some right-winged peers of mine. Personally, I try to attack their opinions at every chance I get, especially when it comes to this particular debate.

I love my country, sure, but because it's my home. Pretty much like my town. I've lived in the same town and, therefore, the same country my entire life. No matter how much things change, I still love this place because its my home.

The government and people, though, are another story.
