RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The zero tolerance policy for swearing :-(

Notice: Whatever's your opinion is yours. I'm saying that the "zero tolerance" policy for swearing is bad and I hope you will agree with me, but you can make up your own mind.

My teacher has this "zero tolerance" policy for swearing. His punishment for just ONE swear word is no lunch hour, and even worse, the swearing person doesn't even get LUNCH!!! He does not even allow substitutions for swear words. I don't swear, but I feel sorry for those who are punished for swearing. In fact, I even want to do something about this policy (This means I may start a revolution, propaganda, etc.)

At my school. My teachers dont give a shit. Plus i yell at everyone, cussing and just being an overall insane unstable person. Especially if i had a really bad day.Every day is a bad day for me. I blame school because everyone messes with me.

Bah. Swearing is a part of life. People need to get over it. I used to hate swearing...Now it doesn't bother. I still don't use it much, only when the situation is extreme enough.

So true.

Hell, I'd have to say zero tolerance pretty much never makes sense.

I feel sorry for you because of your reaction to a perfectly logical rule. You wouldn't swear at your boss because it's disrespectful, you wouldn't swear at your mother. Or perhaps thats why you no longer have a mother.

That's OK liq3, you were not used to swearing. As my notice says, you can have your own opinion about swearing and this zero tolerance for swearing.

at my school one girl got excluded for swearing at a teacher, i know she shouldn't have but exclusion? i bet she wouldn't have got more than a weeks detention for saying something else.

Re: The zero tolerance policy for swearing :-(

I hate all policies against swearing. Freedom of speech is one of the things I live by, and I do swear a fair amount.

I don't like it when people swear at each other, though, because I also live by the belief that insulting others is wrong. I don't find it any worse than just calling them "stupid" or whatever, though.

I really don't get what's so bad about swearing. They're just words.

Re: The zero tolerance policy for swearing :-(

What's the punishment for swearing twice? Thrice?

I think most people "swear" (I hate calling it that because it means something else too.) because they're told not to. This is perfect logical: If you didn't get to do something, you have to try it. More importantly, if someone you hate is telling you not to do something, you may want to disobey him. I avoid swearing partly because I've been told not to swear and partly because I like to use the best words in any situation and swear words don't normally seem to be the best words. I can't tell how much the latter is an excuse for the former.

I don't mean to say that this rule isn't stupid though.

I'm trying to think of some fun way to get punished such that parents, administration or other teachers would be appalled at the punishment. Talk about seals in French. Cry about how your paper is a piece of crap. Read On Bullshit, by Harry Frankfort. Yes! Do that one! I'll send it to you!

What's the class?

Re: The zero tolerance policy for swearing :-(

swearing twice or thrice is just doubling or trippling the sentance
