RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Chess

Some retarded members of the Romanian Parliament have forwarded a proposal to the Ministry of Education demanding to add chess in the school schedule beginning in 2009 as a mandatory subject, one hour per week, as well as chess clubs.

I cannot describe in words how retarded this is. I'm not against the idea of adding chess as a subject - in fact I actually like it. But by any means, do not impose it, do not grade one's performance thus potentially labeling him as dumb or stupid, do not torment students more than they already are.

And above all, do not actually EXPECT students to like it or find it helpful in adulthood - that's the most retarded point by far. Life is not a big game of chess, where you command an army of pawn, bishops etc. at your disposal. The way I see chess is merely a pastime, not an intellectual activity meant to prepare students for adulthood (only exceptions are wannabes professional chess players imo.).

And if they are simply too retarded to fathom my point of view, at least add backgammon and / or checkers to that list. I wouldn't want to give school the satisfaction that I am actually thinking.

Re: Chess

Chess does have skills and lessons built into it that math and english don't offer. Chess and other games are all about strategy. Will you have to play chess to succeed with life? No. But chess and other strategy games program your brain to approach problems differently. It's probably all subconscious but there is value in it.

Now whether or not, it should be mandatory...well...pbblt. Maybe it should be supplementary to another subject. We had a chess week in English if I recall correctly.

Let's do the time warp again!

Precisely... They're too blind to understand that.

Like I said, I have nothing against it if it's mandatory, provided it's promoted in a fun, stress-free manner. The reality is very different, however... Brickwall

Exactly. It's never "let's ask the students". Forget it. They're only the ones who have to, uh, GO TO SCHOOL IN THE FIRST FUCKING PLACE.

Re: Chess

Well, I really wouldn't mind if they did that here in the US, as long as it isn't nazi chess, and if they made it an elective, rather than mandatory. Forcing people to play chess is just plain wrong.

Re: Chess

Well I find it incredibly odd they would make it required...like sure as an elective, but required?? If people don't really like playing in the first place, or lose a lot they'll probably grow to hate the game!! Which I actually like chess a lot, so I don't need more people making fun of it and the people that play.

Really, required is the only weird part.

Oh wait, it is just a proposal anyway, so maybe it won't pass? I hope it doesn't, because then I fear that something will go up like average grades and the US will think 'Oh! Chess=Better grades which TOTALLY= smarter kids! Let's do it too!!'

this is Ridiculous i just cant see how a game could be educational.
i can hardly picture myself running up to my parents exclaiming 'mother, father, i've goten my report and it appears that ive gotten an E in chess'
this whole idea is bad, sooner or later they might aswell make pasttimes subjects in school such as origami (which i actually like)

@ Escapist:

http://www.protv.ro/filme/sahul-ar-pute ... file=55557

How retarded can you be to claim that? "Vor astepta aceste ore de sah cu mult drag" (which roughly means: "They'll dearly be waiting for these chess classes"). And worst off all, how can you fucking force students to play chess, from the very first grade to the very last?! I haven't even learned how to read or write by then and they expect you to do well in chess? Dear lord... None

On the bright side, like Chibichibibear said, it's still just a proposal for the time being, so there's a chance that it will get rejected.

I learned how to take cover if someone's shooting at me, how to aim a gun, I got better reflexes, what weapon to use in what situation... all things that might just save my life one day. Or not. But better safe than sorry Razz

Depends on the game though. I play a lot of games involving guns, but strategy games are good too. Those helped me to multitask better and just generally strategize stuff. There's strategy involved in a lot of things if you think about it.

Re: Chess

Why is everyone complaining? If the public schools are going to be mandatory, and yes, I highly disagree with that, then they definetly need improvement.

My thoughts on Chess:
I hear alot of complaints about high schools mathematics, they mainly have us repeat formulas, which are each a rapid succession of basic math problems, without any reason, no appliance. Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, each of these (and many more), with practice, will help us create these equations, which help explain things like change (Calculus.), or space (Trigonometry, Geometry.). The ability to create these IS taught in school to some extent, (You may have payed attention to 'em, had the long slow lessons not killed your interest.) but for a mandatory education, which most kids trust to aid them in their futures, "too some extent" isn't except able. This is our complaint, correct?

Now if they are going to have a chess class, then they will try to cover chess, and part of chess involves equations. More logic could be taught! And yes, I absolutely hate mandatory schooling, but again, improvements in the curriculum should be encouraged, and this has potential.

[\Thoughts]

I haven't slept in nearly 24 hours, so sorry if that was a bit jumpy/completely unreadable.

Also, I just realized something: When we teach someone, they are "taught" like a rope, and when people procrastinate, not allowing themselves to become taught, they are "slackers"... I love language.

[\realization]

Who are the brain police?
