RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

I know a few European countries have a bearable system. I think Sweden's school system is fairly nice.

Eh I mostly mean like...a GOOD system...not bearable...so basically if it has any of these, it's fail.

- Forced subjects

So yeh, that's gonna rule out a lot of schools :/

Hm,let's see about the romanian schools..

1. We don't have detentions.
2. If we skip too much, they say they can expell us, but in the last school days the head teacher takes the record and erases all unattended dates.

That's kinda all that's good about our schools.. the rest is shitty :/

Re: Are there country(ies) without a fucked up school system?

From wikipedia, here are the countries without compulsory education:

- Bahrain
- Brunei
- Cameroon
- Eritrea
- Ethiopia
- Fiji
- Kenya
- Maldives
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Solomon Islands
- Sudan
- Suriname
- Zambia

Unfortunately, it isn't much, and most of these countries are 3rd World African/Asian shitholes. This is very much a Worldwide problem, I'm afraid.

I disagree with the schedule point. I view the Summerhill Free School as a model for reforming the current system. I include some excerpts from their website.
Quote:Just as in most other schools, the children have a timetable and each teacher keeps a register but classes as well as activities /projects are not compulsory. Each sign-up student is given a blank timetable at the beginning of term on which they write their lessons. The timetable is changed from term to term depending on the choices of the kids and the subjects offered to them.

Children below the age of 12 have their own teachers and classrooms with multi-activity spaces. In Class 1 (aged 5-9) the teacher can provide a timetable for the week, or organise activities in response to the children's needs and wishes. Class 2 (aged 10-12) have a sign up at the beginning of term for a wide variety of subjects and activities/projects. The Class 1 and 2 spaces are carefully designed to allow the children to engage in independent as well as timetabled activity.

The principle of the timetable is to allow the students to make informed choices within the context of a structured day.

Quote:We don’t expect new pupils to attend many classes. For some this is a short-term thing, for others the return to formal learning takes longer. We are as proud of the pupils who seldom attend classes as we are of our academics. We do have strategies if we feel the need to monitor, and we will offer help if appropriate.

I agree with having a schedule, but it should be designed by the learner himself, and changeable at any time.

But I agree with the other two points-everything should be voluntary.

Re: Are there country(ies) without a fucked up school system?

Eh, the main problem with the schedule is 2 part.
1. It's basically a proven fact it's impossible to learn effectively when you are being interrupted every hour.
2. Some homeschoolers work on the same project (say...learning to draw) for months at a time. This is impossible with a schedule.

And yeh. From the list of countries without compulsory schooling, it seems the world it pretty screwed at the moment.

Oh, the Summerhill thing is am improvement over ordinary schooling...but it's still got some of the bad elements of school. eg. Implying that you need a teacher to learn.

Quote:I agree with having a schedule, but it should be designed by the learner himself, and changeable at any time.
I agree with that, because it's basically the same as "no schedule, unless you want one".

P.S. Converting all school's to Summerhill style would be awesome. It'd get the ball rolling.

Well, the blocks can be longer than an hour. I personally can't concentrate on hard sciences for more than four hours at a time-so I'd probably put at least two subjects into my day.

And with stuff like languages, thirty minutes every day is much better than five hours every Monday. Having a schedule or not, and the structure of a schedule, should be each learner's choice

Which is exactly why we're brainstorming ways to make school better, and one of the key principles is that nothing will be mandatory or forced.

Doesn't Denmark pay their students to go to school? Or is it Sweden? I totally forget. Anyways, even if their system is fucked up, it's better than being forced to serve your valuable time and being treated like a slave. But that's just my opinion.

Technically itd be the badily managed schools that would be considered best. Simply because the bad management could allow you to get away with bad grades and tardiness.

Are there country(ies) without a fucked up school system?

Finland's school system has had a lot of praise heaped on it in recent years. Even Ken Robinson mentioned them in his most recent TED talk, which I shared in this thread: Ken Robinson: How to escape education's death valley

And, they do have some impressive results in terms of stats. They did an intentional reform of their school system decades back, and they're now near the top in the world in standardized test results, according to the international PISA tests which are given to 15-year-olds in a range of countries.

Finland also has other impressive stats -- high completion rate for high school, large numbers of students going on to college... they pay teachers well, apparently respect teachers as a valued profession, require all teachers to have a master's degree, and select only top candidates to be teachers.

And on the student side of things, they offer more recess, seem to have more flexibility, and there's more of a focus of getting students help when they need it.

Here's one article that presents some of these elements as a list:

26 Amazing Facts About Finland's Unorthodox Education System

However, a while back I wondered if maybe all is not perfect there. I discovered a question asked on those international PISA tests, as part of a general survey. It asks each 15-year-old student whether they're happy in school, or not.

It's a simple question, but it must indicate something. Of all the OECD countries surveyed, the overall average is about 80% happy -- meaning 20% who for some reason(s) don't feel happy in school overall. That must, in part, overlap with the School Survival kinds of people.

But, Finland happens to be one of the countries with the highest percentage of students not being happy. Only 71% of students in Finland said "happy" on that survey. So something must be wrong, right?

I'm curious where the disconnect is. I think this is one of a number of research projects those on SS could collaborate on, and then do something with the results. How could we connect with Finnish students, and more students from around the world in general? How can we find out the real deal?

If you'd like to read more on this topic, check out this article: Lowest Performers Feeling Happiest at School. Sweden in PISA-2013 paradox. The author compares and contrasts Finland and Sweden, along with other countries. This article raises a lot of good points and questions. I encourage those who are interested in the question of school systems to check that and the other links here out.

Lots of countries are trying to improve their school systems, and want "good" ones, but how to do that is where the problems emerge.

That gets to another link: Yong Zhao giving a 20-minute talk called "Redefining excellence." This is on my list of the videos that are really worth watching and discussing. So, I encourage all of you to watch and discuss it. Smile

I think online study maybe replace the tradition schools, and it won't take so long, remember 2009 we can't watch movies on mobilephone and in 2013 we use smart phone everwhere.I believe science technology may change the traditional schools and maybe we can be more smart ,like AI.But,as a person from china,I think USA is so much better than china, you don't have to study Chinese character right? But all of us in china have to study English, and you know the math in china is so difficult if you see the paper we take for exam, and we can't allowed to use calculator during exam. And remember the last one, whether in china nor America we both have the teenager always like--hipster culture and indie culture or marysue.human are alike ,you think different then it actually to be same.

Because they don't want to be confined into rooms where they have to sit for fucking hours, listening to a teacher yapping on about shit they can read from the textbook themselves.

I'm very curious as to the answer, as well. But part of it may be, they still go to school, even if it's more relaxed and friendlier than in other countries.

From the videos I've seen, they still have classrooms with desks, and a teacher at the front. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Here's a short video that gives a glimpse inside some Finnish schools:

Watch on YouTube

It still looks like classrooms with desks and a teacher at the front of the class. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Here's another video, where a student compares Finnish and American schools... though of course people's experience will differ:

Are there country(ies) without a fucked up school system?

Hmm, I went looking for surveys of Finnish students. I found one paper:

Happiness Decreases during Early Adolescence—A Study on 12- and 15-Year-Old Finnish Students (the full paper)

However, it doesn't look like they examined things like boredom or interests. Sometimes if you don't ask the right questions, it's impossible to figure out what's really going on.

A large percentage (over half) of the students said "Better success in school" would make them happier. That makes me wonder...

Also, almost 1/4 of students said "I would dare to be myself" would make them happier... that also points to a discrepancy.

Here's Table 2 from the paper, "What would increase my happiness? Percentages of choices in descending order."
