RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The Benefits of Homework
This makes me sad.
Actually, no. That makes me want to write a sarcastic list about the "benefits of homework" instead. Anyone want to help?

WOW, Let's just be all motivated to things we are against doing and stress our minds to death with self-denial.

Re: The Benefits of Homework
"Homework is a powerful way to extend learning."
That line actually made me laugh when I read it. Oh yeah, it's a very powerful tool to extend learning. Kids don't, you know, just write stuff down and try to forget school as soon as possible!!!
This whole article is just making me angry >:( They seem to imply that students would be unable to learn outside of school, if not for homework!!
"The students feel empowered," do they? Having their entire lifer controlled by that planner, their parents, and teachers. I'm sure they loooove it.
Men are born ignorant, not stupid; they are made stupid by education.

Re: The Benefits of Homework
After all, the bruises and emotional scars aren't enough to remember homework by - you have to do the HOMEWORK for that!
Outside school, teenagers have nothing better to do than homework.

Re: The Benefits of Homework
I love wasting paper. I mean, I have it in my house, I need to use it! Oh, and don't forget all the time. I have time, I need to use it somehow! And unlike paper, there is no erase with that! I can't get any of it back!
I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

I want to call the article stupid but then I'd be doing an injustice. Language limits me in describing particularly horrible cases of fail.

So true.
Quote:Homework is good for you!!! How else wilL you learn to hate everything that gets forced on you!?
That's actually true in a weird sort of way...
Quote:After all, the bruises and emotional scars aren't enough to remember homework by - you have to do the HOMEWORK for that!
You mean schoolwork... right? Otherwise it doesn't make sense.
Quote:They have a forum. Oh goodie, this could be a win.
I pity them. No, wait... I don't.
Quote:I love wasting paper.
I could make a whole seperate thing about how school is destroying forests.
The thing with sarcasm is that it makes people smile and also exposes the stupidity of school/homework/whatever all at the same time... which is why I like funny things, even though people might not consider them "serious" or helpful... they actually are.

Better yet, let's not troll. Let's debate them with intelligent discussion.

If it weren't for homework, I would never have discovered SS. (Homework was the thing that tortured me the most in school.)

Re: The Benefits of Homework
Eh, homework isn't that bad. It's annoying to have to do those things you already know and it interferes with time that could be better spent learning something new, but it isn't horrible. I would say the worst thing about school is the forced curriculum with little-to-no choice from the student and the limited curriculum, because schools max out at certain levels of education (and this education is often not high quality). It does teach you responsibility, but in a very bad way: it teaches the child that responsibility always involves those things that they do not enjoy, and therefore they do not wish to be responsible.

Re: The Benefits of Homework
So true, homework is often in a "Drill-to-Skill" setup. If you do it enough times the hope is that it burns into your brain so you can't ever forget it. Personally I prefer the term "Drill-to-Kill", 'cause nothing kills the joy of doing something quite like forced repetition.
