RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Parents Let Kid Drop Out of High School to Focus on Gaming

http://www.newsobserver.com/2766/story/1155589.html

Quote:Blake is so dedicated to gaming that his parents let him quit school so he can better concentrate on it. They pay for home tutors instead. Mom and Dad do this, even though there are very few people in this country who make their living playing competitive video games. That is not to say that it was an easy decision for them to let Blake leave school last September. They would have preferred that he stay in high school with his brother. But he bugged them until they let him quit. "We couldn't take the complaining anymore," says Hunter. "He always told me that he thought school was a waste of time."

Also posted in the news section.

Some people are apparently going ballistic saying how bad his parents are for letting him do that. Even though they're basically homeschooling him.

This is epic on a brand new level.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: Parents Let Kid Drop Out of High School to Focus on Gaming

That's a really weird goal to work towards... getting paid to play a video game? There's no such thing, is there? But, whatever.

As for the comments section, I'm not really all too surprised. It's something for any-one who claims that "the schools are not working" to look at. After all, school is not about learning. It's about creating a system/forcing people into it. And many people have become so brainwashed, so destroyed, that they have become dependent on this system and willing to fight to protect it. The schools are working all too well...

The only good signature is a dead signature.

Actually, you can get paid to play games.

Re: Parents Let Kid Drop Out of High School to Focus on Gaming

But you have to be ridiculously good to make a lot of money from that. And if you're good at one game, that isn't enough 'cause new games come out all the time to replace the older ones. So you have to keep up as well... it's not like regular sports that stay pretty much the same all the time.

Either way, there are other ways to get paid to play games, like being a game tester/reviewer and probably some other things.

I want those parents, badly.

Although I consider Counter Strike the bullshitiest game ever made.
And I also hate playing in multiplayer. Pfeh, socializing.

Actually, I agree. Letting the kid stay home to play games is a good thing. He WILL get bored. Trust me. :o And if he doesn't, he'll become pro. o.O

Regardless of his interests, aside from hurting people, ANYTHING is better then school.

I'd choose mandatory schooling over guitar hero.

I wouldn't. Mainly because, well...I'd choose nothing over school. And I did. I did basically nothing for 6 months. Was so worth it :o.

Re: Parents Let Kid Drop Out of High School to Focus on Gaming

LOL at the first comment. THIS IS WHY WE NEED MORE SCHOOLING, my ass. What the hell do they care what some kid is getting homeschooled for anyway?

That's one of the biggest things about school that annoys me, the arrogance. That they think they know better than anyone else what's good for your kids, despite that they really could give less of a shit.

Re: Parents Let Kid Drop Out of High School to Focus on Gaming

Wish I could do that. But my current problem is that I'm not a early awakener. I'm a night guy, I like to sleep and wake late, so I stayed in the afternoon class. And since the beggining of this year, I had to go to the morning class. I think I'm slowly going crazy due to lack of good sleep. I told my parents and my grandmother about how I'm slowly going mad from having to awake early as hell only to go to School... SCHOOL! They think I'm overdoing it, heck, they even laugh at it, but as soon as the clock hits almost midnight (time I go to sleep, I REFUSE to sleep earlier. I can't waste time!), anger takes over me and I my blood boils in anger with enough heat to burn a hole in the ground. When I have to wake (at 6:00, 6:30 or 6:50), it's even worse. I get a incredible urge to go and kill someone. Something. My blood boils like fire. And nobody in my family cares, of course. It's not their problem, so they don't care. Bastards.

Have you tried staying up, going to school and then going to sleep after that? Like, the opposite of the "normal people" daytime schedule...

Toward the end of the school year I did this all the time, and frankly it was the best sleep schedule I'd ever had!! Except it leaves little time for socializing. The only reason I don't have it anymore is because my like one friend comes over a lot and keep me awake...jerk.

Also, this seems very good. If he really wants to get paid to play video games, he probably needs to work at it all day. I can't imagine that's easy job to get. And he's probably need a job too, for all the latest stuff that goes along with a career like that. Dropping out of school might have been the best thing he ever did for his career!! And those are just some freaking awesome parents.

wow, ok. how about we look at it this way:

he dropped out of school so he could be home schooled. when hes not 'in class' hes perusing his hobby of guitar hero very passionately, which, possibly, could earn him money in the future/

*facepalm*

It's awesome to have parents let you drop out to pursue your interests and enhance your abilities but let their son drop out for a video game addiction? None

Him making a band and pursuing the music industry would have been a better scenario.

This amuses me. Why does it matter why he drops out as long as he's happier that way? He's still getting homeschooled regardless, AND he's doing all the work without any complaints apparently.
