RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Huge, well needed rant/vent: My D in history

I need to vent ... badly.

So I made a D in history last semester because I gave up on that boring-ass class and stopped showing up to lecture. By the way, a D is passing and you get credit for the class. Texas law requires that everyone getting a BA in anything needs 2 semesters of US history.

My dad just won't leave me alone about this fucking D. He's mentioned it to me at least 7 or 8 times now since May. I'm starting to get angry. And I can get pretty angry, believe me. Smile

I begged my dad today to let me take linear algebra online. He asked me why and I said well, I took calculus 1 last semester and cal 2 and 3 are required for linear algebra so if I take lin-al and complete it by December, I can take cal 4 and diff. eqs. at the community college in the spring. He puts on this like reluctant, annoyed face and after several seconds he says, "Well what are you gonna do about that history? That D looks really bad. I don't know where you're going but you need to face reality here soon and get yourself on track. We're running out of time. Just something you should think about. Anyway, I'll see if I can come up with a couple hundred bucks." All that was said in a tone dripping with arrogance.

facepalm.jpg

First. And this is key... NO ONE GIVES A FLYING FUCK ABOUT US HISTORY. You know why? Because the class is required by state law and hardly anyone actually gives a damn about it because the syllabus for US history always sucks anyway. You end up memorizing a bunch of people and dates. There was two important dates: 1776, 1865. My dad makes it sound like someone is going to see that D and go into a coma because it's so horrible and shocking.

Second. I hate to sound like an arrogant dipshit like a lot of math majors but some little voice inside my head is telling me that an academic transcript consisting of: linear algebra, vector calculus, differential equations, complex analysis, partial differential equations, modern algebra (I can take all these by fall '09) with some other bullshit no one cares about is going to look good. That D in history might actually look good.

University application committee: "Wow look at this! This kid failed out of college, got his GED and took basically enough math classes in a year's time for a BA in math! Holy shit!!! He obviously didn't care about all those other idiotic classes he was taking. We really need him here." *stamps ACCEPTED onto a piece of paper and attaches an offer for a full scholarship*

Third. I like how my dad keeps acting like we're so poor. He said he'll see if he can get together $200 after pulling $500 from my account which he recently pulled $600 out of for God knows what.

My dad gets: $5000 / month for sitting on his ass around the house because he's a retired military officer, ~$6000 / year to deduct taxes because I am attached to him as a minor, other various government handouts for being retired. We also live in a cheap house outside the city. What in the fuck is he doing with that money?

My mom personally set aside $15,000 to help me go back to school and continues to work every day and add to that. She lives in the city and therefore pays shitloads in taxes compounded with her massive income tax.

Honestly...My dad must think I'm dumber than a bag of dicks. He thinks I don't see this stuff. Just being around this fool is insulting to my intelligence. And it really sucks when someone who you know is a lot dumber than you is so confident, gets there way all the time, is condescending to everyone that isn't in the military and a Republican, and is capable of having so much control over your life.

Re: Huge, well needed rant/vent: My D in history

The state has such little clue of what learning actually is that it's staggering. From the STATE no less. The very people responsible for holding power.

Yeah, make everyone take US history. Because it's clearly so important. We wouldn't want anyone to have, uh, lack of "good values", now, would we?

Sadhug

Your dad sucks. Stabhead

I'd recommend getting away from Mr Phail and going to live with your mom if she can afford it and wouldn't mind you being there. Then again if it was that simple I guess you'd have done it already. Razz

Also, try to get rid of your dad's access to your account in case he decides to steal any more from you. I don't know if that's possible though.

But that would require him to actually think. Razz

If I were you and he said that D in history thing I would have hit him. None
Good self control.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

You got a D in history. That means you're going to burn in hell for all eternity.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Re: Huge, well needed rant/vent: My D in history

I have always thought history is one of the worst subjects in public school. I have learnt more about history from wikipedia then from school. l also English is pretty pointless after middle school. Even my teacher says unless you become an teacher you will never have to use all the crap that they teach you, like identifying predicate pronoung from possesive pronouns (that is just an example.)
