RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Being in college = no right to complain?

At least this is what I see online. Someone will make a post letting off steam about some pain in the ass project or test. Without fail, there will always be at least one ass fuck who will lecture them about how college is supposed to be hard and that they shouldn't expect an easy ride. Nope, it's never that one instructor who wants detailed essay answers on their tests (from memory), nor is it the textbook that fails to explain the subject matter with clarity. Even when this isn't a problem in other classes and that other students have the same difficulty with this one class, it's still the students fault.

God I really hate this. It's more of that "the teacher is always right" and "life is an endurence test" BS that has been debunked on here several times.

Just had to get that off my chest.

Is college the same as high school? Because I've heard the same thing about high schools. But you forgot the part where some idiot adds in that "you have it too easy now, stop complaining". I hate those people.

Well, to play the devil's advocate a little bit here, college is optional, so if you whine, you do so knowing that the only reason you're there is your own will.

But that doesn't mean you should keep emotions pent up. That shit's not healthy, yo.

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Yes, but no matter how bad it is, for a lot of people they feel don't really have a choice because of parents, society, or whatever. It's not healthy to keep things pent up, yah, but it is best to put it where people'll appreciate it, or at least not judge you for it.

That's my dilemma right now, though I have mixed feelings on college in general. Also even if someone voluntarly goes to college, they should still have the right to voice their displeasures.

To answer the other question, I've had more freedom in college than I've had in school. It helps that it's optiona; so they can't order you around like they own you. It also helps that you're not there 35 hours a week. Sure, there's more homework, but when you only have to go to class 12 hours a week, it's a fair trade. Though I don't know how it would compare to high school since I was homeschooled, but I'm going by what I know of it.

Re: Being in college = no right to complain?

College is much better than high school. Trust me, anyone who says high school is "the best years of your life" is talking out their ass. I'm an engineering student. Engineering is renowned for being a ridiculously difficult major. Yes, it's occasionally stressful, but I'd rather suck a hundred horse dicks than deal with the restrictive environment of high school.

That being said, college has some hideously unfair courses, you'll likely run into at least one. At honestly, when you do, there's more or less exactly fuck-all you can do to make it easier on yourself (the other option is try to change things, and if you'd like to try that, I'd like to introduce you to my friend "bureaucratic inertia"). It's one of those things where you just have to bite down and bear it. Find your own little shortcuts, ditch the textbook if you have to. This is actually a good test for life because once in a while you'll run up against an obstacle that looks like it'll take far too much in terms of blood, sweat and tears. It is then that you find your way around, under, over, or through said obstacle.

Luckily for me, my college is fairly small, so students actually do have a decent amount of input into life at the college. Recently there was an open forum for students to discuss things they thought could be improved. I was mostly there for the free pizza, though I did think of one or two things that could have been done better, but someone else covered them.
