RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I love this game altogether. Essentially everything about is... great. I'm a sucker for open world games, which probably contributes to it, but the freedom of it all, the variety in scenery (until you reach dungeons :( ). It has excellent AI, thousands of people with actual daily routines and personalities... it's an awesome game, one of my favorites, up there with Mass Effect. Anyone else blatantly obsessed w/ it?

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I've heard Morrowind is better. I've also heard (from very reputable sources) the AI really sucks.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I couldn't get into Morrowind; the graphics were a little shaky, and I recall having some sort of beef with the lack of faster travel. The game in general just didn't suit what I enjoyed, and it was the subtle differences that made me like Oblivion better.

I'll admit the AI isn't as good as it could be (the enemies could try JUMPING once in a while), but it does make for entertaining fight scenes. I guess what I meant was the emphasis on daily routines, personalities, your relationship with other characters, and, one cool but frustrating aspect, when civilians run off to tell guards of crimes.

Tattletaling douchebags.

Yeh, well...

The lack of faster travel helps immersion imo (and you can get from one side of the island to the other in 2 minutes anyway using the current fast travel). There are ways to run ludicrously fast, and a levitation spell always helps. The graphics aren't bad in the slightest. Gameplay > graphics.

I do admit running everywhere was a little tedious, but imo it's a good time to think about your life, even if it does break immersion. :]

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I've been a little too obsessed with Oblivion for my own good. But I haven't played it in a long time. I guess once you've done everything there is to do, it loses its appeal. The best part for me was the story missions, and playing an evil character who never gets caught killing anyone. This one time I made a guard fall to his death off the side of a cliff by leading him there with illusion spells. Free stuff, yay. I kinda avoided the dungeons and stuff. I had more fun messing with the people.

I like the whole open endness of the game and how you can do what ever the fuck you want and once you reach a certain level your basically god.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Mhm. Except, things like 100% invisibility and 100% reflect damage always make it too easy for me. They're good if you're stuck at a hard part, like the last thieves guild quest, but imo they make the game too easy.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Thieves guild is pure win. Biggrin
My first character just stole shit, never really killed anything unless there was some really good reason to. That was great. Until I ran out of castles and rich people to loot... and realized I had nothing to really spend all that money on since all I was doing was stealing anyway.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Yeah, I got like 500k, bought every house, but then the game got kind of boring and repetitive. Thing is, I've done everything except the Main Quest, so at least I've still got that before the game becomes completely obsolete.

Isn't that what mods are for? There's nothing quite like riding through the countryside on Akatosh, or smiting enemies as Sauron.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

... I started playing the damn game again a few days ago. I think this thread might have been messing with my subconscious to try and make me do it. Laugh

Either way, I started a new guy, on the hardest difficulty where rats can kill me in 2 hits (and it takes a lot of hits for me to kill one). I spend a lot of time running for my life. I'm gonna be a marksman/summoner/mage ('cause staying close to anything is just downright suicidal)... but the main reason I started this character was to get my Luck as high as possible, just to see what happens.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I love Oblivion and Morrowind. They're both great. Morrowind I know a lot better, and have just about completed the main quest (but then stopped because I was spending too much time on it). Oblivion I can't play a lot of it because my graphics card isn't good enough, but I'm fine in the city, so I've run around a lot of the cities. I like the thieves guild and what is it, Assassin's guild (months since I've played. Argh!). Being a vampire was cool!

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Iirc, I played Oblivion a few months after it was released (and after I got a 6800). I loved it. I still do. But I don't play it oftenly now, even though I replaced that 6800 with a 7600GT. Now I'm addicted to Morrowind. I was a pretty avid hater of Morrowind, but after a few days of playing it, browsing on planetelderscrolls looking for all sorts of mods was the only thing I did all day long xD

But meh, I like Gothic series over ES, any day.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I got back my bootleg version of the game and I installed some awesome mod called OOO(Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul). Basically it makes the game more static on leveling(Enemies got a level cap now, bandits don't end up with super rare glass weapons when you're level 20) as many players complained about enemies leveling with you(which ruins the idea of leveling) and adds a huge whole of items, a couple of quests and a bunch of features(Such as locked chests with traps(You can detect them with a enough high level of security) and being able to break treasure chests with your strength) along with a lot of balance fixes. There has been a lot of treasure chests added too <3, jewelry boxes have also been added in every houses in the game, you need to steal the key from the house's owner to open them. I only mostly know the added thief stuff, since I always play as a thief or an assassin >< .

You also have to think with your head now, dungeon bosses are now way more static(high level usually) and now rewards you with satisfying loot instead of crap. You can't just go in the dungeon and smash through it(Ghosts kicked my ass in the first dungeon of the game and the necromancer at the end kicked my ass too, I ended up stealing the key from the altar and GTFOing).

I'm also using the No-psychic guards mod and the Hide and Attack mod, they're great Biggrin .
