RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: A Poll about liq3.

Though you can be a little pushy and over-defensive about your beliefs sometimes, you don't annoy me. You're clearly very intelligent, and when your posts aren't about SR, ad hominems, and 9/11, I tend to agree with them Rolleyes . You give pretty good advice, you have an open mind, and you're quite knowledgeable when it comes to self-improvement....and you're cool for having the audacity to drop out of college (or TAFE, whatever). Cool

By the way, you're also on my " 'friends' aka people I respect" list.

No. I just try to be annoying, which I think I succeeded at. If I actually tried trolling, this place would be pwned. Smile

Re: A Poll about liq3.

See, this always struck me as strange... It's like just because we don't agree with someone, suddenly they become lower than us. As long as the other side has a reasonable objection that they can back up, why should we get offended on any level at all or think they're stupid?

And no, I wasn't trying to name names, just an obvious observation in almost every corner of life.

Interesting...

And thanks to all the people who... complimented me. Biggrin

I just realised. I think all the people who 'don't like' me, I have disagree'd with at one point. I notice that people like Soul and dreamer don't really participate in the SR or 9/11 arguments. This seems to imply that my different beliefs (and method of expressing them) has got some people undie's in a knot.

Yah, it's probably cause I'm not actually trying to convince you I am correct. That's rather impossible. I'm mostly doing it for practice arguing. I find it kinda enjoyable.

Wolfeh Wrote:So getting people's "undies in a knot" will end up biting you in the ass. And however much I love the idea of riling up some feathers in a debate, it is not an effective way to gain support for your opinions.
I'm not trying to gain support. If I was trying to do that, I'd read books about persuasion tactics. I'm trying to have a logical debate. The problem is that almost every reply has a fallacy in it, or just shows the person lacks knowledge about the topic. The people I'm arguing with usually have too much pride to admit to either. I've only met 3 people that aren't, and they aren't on this forum.

Of course, you get people like Soul who are smart enough to avoid the fallacy ridden debating.

Re: A Poll about liq3.

Rofl Sorry, but this too funny.
Wolfeh Wrote:In the end it won't matter how logical you think you are if everyone else thinks you're a pompous ass caught up in your own ego.
While true, that is an ad hominem.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the reason people get so ticked off with me is. I strongly believe it's because they know I'm right and are basically in denial about it.

I used to reply calming to people's arguments, but lately it's been nothing but fallacy after fallacy, and I just got sick of it after a while. No matter how calm and logical I was, they'd keep hitting me with fallacies. Arguing with them was pointless, and got no where.

So now, I'm a complete ass when people start using fallacies. If you can't take the heat, stop with the fallacies.

Re: A Poll about liq3.

?

They are fools for arguing it, just like I'm a fool for getting baited into arguing it. We're all fools. Deal with it.

P.S. The only difference is that I avoid fallacies like the plague, and when someone points out that I did make one, I admit to it (after double checking).
