RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The "rules"... sort of

This post is outdated, rather go here:
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=20229

Hidden stuff:
What you can do to help:
  • Be yourself
  • Try to use proper spelling, punctuation and grammar as much as possible.
  • Try to post in the most appropriate forum, and try not to make discussions go off-topic - rather start a new thread. Just quote what you want to respond to in a new topic, and call it something like "In reply to 'original topic name'".
  • Please don't post personally identifiable information about yourself or anyone else here (real names, phone numbers, etc). You never know who might be reading.
  • Don't post porn or anything else illegal. We can get into trouble if you do this.
  • Please report posts that go off-topic or that contain any of the things listed above (personal info, thread in wrong forum, illegal stuff). You can do this by simply clicking the "report post" button which is at the bottom of each post. We don't always see absolutely everything that everyone posts here, so a little help spotting things is appreciated.[/list:u]

    High Maintenance Members:
Any member who causes the admins or moderators to spend an excessive amount of time cleaning up after them (by starting threads in the wrong forum, or derailing discussions, or generally being an ass) will be asked to stop. If they do not stop, they may have their posting ability temporarily limited to The Basement.

An "excessive amount of time" is defined as anyone who requires mod/admin attention on a daily basis.

    Banning:
We never permanently ban anyone, except in extreme cases, like people who seriously harass other members or who try to compromise forum security in some way.

Short temp bans might be used on people who flood the forum for whatever reason, just to get them to stop.

Hmmm....I'm not sure I fully agree with the off-topic thing. Because in my experience threads that start out on-topic then go off-topic quickly die a death. So is it really worth it?

The problem then is that you end up getting an influx of new threads.

Isn't that what threads and sections are for?

Else we would all be talking on one singular thread.

Re: The "rules"... sort of

FJ dose have a valid point. All threads eventually become de-railed. That's just how conversation works.

If the thread is very important the main subject will always pop back up, but if it's a worthless or less popular one it will eventually die
And without this we would have the split conversations as extra threads and all the original threads that will last longer without off-topic conversation.
I think it would work better without that "rule"

Other than that i think the list is just fine

Re: The "rules"... sort of

That "rule" (not really a rule, more like a suggestion) is really only meant for serious discussions. It's annoying when it suddenly becomes something like "Hey, X, didn't you do that one time?"... and then that just takes over. Sure, we can split it, but why not just prevent it from happening in the first place? There's not much point (usually) splitting something in General Talk... 'cause that's what it's for.

but i will explain regardless.
my dad dosen't want me on ss so i have made an alternative account until the heat dies off.
if you wish to discuss it further you may pm me.

anyway, back on the topic at hand.
i agree with that soul, split only the important topics like say philosophical discussion. i had
ish-stated that previously but its good to see what you mean by splitting. Biggrin

So, what's our stand on copyrighted stuff? Do we just claim fair use on everything by default? Sounds good to me, 'cause I don't want to give up my avatar, but it's a thing we need to form a stance on.

It's a relatively small forum on the internet. Nobody gives a damn what we do with copyrighted material.

Avatars are tiny little thumbnails usually. Pretty much nobody cares about tiny thumbnails. As for everything else, unless we actually KNOW it's copyrighted, it stays until someone complains. There's just no other way to know and it isn't worth the time to check everything. Shrug

Updated part about reporting. Now it says this:
Quote:Please report posts that go off-topic or that contain any of the things listed above (personal info, thread in wrong forum, illegal stuff).
As opposed to 'anything you think a moderator should do something about'. Please have a look at this thread to get an idea of what not to report.

All works are copyrighted, unless declared otherwise by the owner. You don't need to sign it, or but a little C on it, it's copyrighted by default. The only difference is whether the owner gives a fuck and is therefore willing to exercise his right.

Not legally though.

But yeah, I figured it wouldn't be a big deal considering the news section is one big copyrights violation. I'm sure most photographers and journalists have better things to do than try to legally persecute SS.

To be a pedant, they do. It's copyright infrigment even if they don't object. However, most companies/people have better things to do: if the material is removed immidietly, they'll drop it, because a law suit would be hassle (with forums, you've got to sue the person who posted it as well as Soul for neglecting to remove it)-the company doesn't really care once it's gone.

But to be completely precise, they have a case. However, no company will go to the trouble.

No. What I mean is, if they try to get us in legal trouble, we remove the thing they're complaining about. Hence, no sensible case.

They still have a case if they can prove that SS's portrayal of the work hurt their commercial interests when it was up. Even if you remove the infringing material, you can still be held responsible for the time it was up.

Re: The "rules"... sort of

Sigh. That's what we type up. A store can't set a policy to sell beer to 12-year-olds, if the drinking age is legally set as higher. Policies of individuals don't override the law, whether we like it or not.

The responsibilty of a forum owner is of course limited-the poster is the offender. However, if the company wanted to be a jerk, they could sue SS for negligence. As I said though, it's irrelevant-trial costs are too high for anyone to want to take advantage of that.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.
