RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Forum ads

I'm experimenting 'cause I no longer feel any guilt for putting ads on the forums. Especially since if you want to make them disappear, all you need to do is block javascript from this domain: http://scripts.chitika.net/ - Any ad or script blocker should do just fine.

I'm doing this 'cause according to stats, the forum is read by *gasp* ... actually around 400-500 people every day. Yes, different people. We have a lot more lurkers than we realize. These 400-500 people view around 4000-5000 pages a day. Scary shit.

Also, don't click on ads just for the lulz. K? Razz

And I realize I haven't put 'em on all the styles yet. I'm too lazy right now. Maybe later. Laugh

This is nothing but an attempt to force IE users to switch to Firefox. You know we don't have adblocker.

I'm sure there are addons for IE. I had some for old IE 5 back in the day.

Ads? Here? No wonder my connection gets slow whenever I access the forum. Anywuhs, when you aren't logged in, a few ads do appear, and since most lurkers haven't joined yet, what's the point?

A lot of the guests are actually from the main site, 'cause I integrated the login system with the rest of the site. My stat counter things don't include those.

It should, as long as there are hidden people. Also, the ads should have no effect on this whatsoever.

Re: Forum ads

Yeah. Well, I guess it doesn't matter really, but ad networks say they don't want ads showing on pages with lots of swearing. I know those pop up everywhere anyways, but they're a lot more prevalent in there. Not that any ad network person is ever likely to notice. But whatever. Razz

*BUMP*

Well, you may have noticed I put some links to books on Amazon at the bottom of each page. If you buy anything from Amazon within 24 hours after clicking one of those links, I get a small commission on whatever you buy.

What do you guys think? Too intrusive? Too small? Not Dark Orchid enough? Poopies?

They're pretty hard to notice. Which is good, but I wonder how many ppl will see them Smile

Anyway, see how it goes. Why not add an actual bookstore page, too? Something with cover images, more info, etc. Populate it with relevant stuff. They offer a thing to make that easy... http://astore.amazon.com/

Re: Forum ads

Bookstore is good idea. Me likes. I think I played about with that astore before though. Or maybe it was that other list type thing. *goes to check out Astore*

The ads are indeed pretty small... did that on purpose 'cause I don't want them standing out too much. I think with the amount of page views the forums get in one day, some people are bound to check something out. I'll see how it goes.
