RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

What They Won’t Teach In School Could Make You Rich

Randomly stumbled upon this:
Quote:Today’s topic is about “what they won’t teach you in school” whether that be high school, college, whatever.

One of the biggest problems with schools these days is the fact that teachers don’t really teach you the life skills you need to actually make money. (yes, hard cold cash)
So what?

Well, today I will teach you that important lesson, how to make money, not just slave away your life in a cubicle at a rich corporation.

As I was growing up and going to school, finishing up college, I began to notice more and more how badly my professors and TAs got paid. Yes, they were still wearing worn-out jackets, clothing, all the while trying to save even more money by bringing sandwich bags. What I really didn’t understand was how these people could teach me anything. Well, the truth is that they didn’t teach me anything useful but they did teach me how life can be boring and same if you stay “in the box”. I simply felt most of the A students/professors/TAs were all in the box, taking tests and life WAY too seriously.

Anyways, I was the guy in college who would skateboard to classes and bring all my “coolness” but most TAs and professors seem to see me as a smart-ass cool student who shouldn’t belong there.
So what does this have to do with everything?

It has everything to do with my post-college experience as I had already thought “out of the box” in college by being unique and different from the rest of population.

Had I isolated myself from the society?

Heck no, I had more friends who were like me, thinking out of the box, while all the A students had no time to play, social network, etc…etc…

Eventually, my opposition to authority and the “way” society teaches you life has lead to me doing something for myself, blogging. Even if it’s not blogging, I believe that I’d be doing something for myself if I were not blogging right now.

My dad is one of the best international tradesmen/businessmen I know, he tells me before I goto college, “Son, just get Cs. School isn’t so important.” Let me also add that this is coming from a person who graduated at the “TOP” of his class, that’s right, number 1 out of couple thousand students.

Now, I was dumbfounded but I did follow his advice and “barely” graduated in 5 years, almost failing one class, but ended up with an A- simply because my TA hooked me up. (It was my last class and I missed the finals but the TA let me take it again since it was my last class)

After that, I somehow knew school was just an ideal platform for non-ideal people. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I did learn whole bunch of calculus, physics, and engineering, but THAT doesn’t make you money.

The worst part was that after college, everyone told me to get a JOB!

I got a JOB and that was the worst part of my life, slaving like everyone else in the rat race.

Here’s one advice that will help you get out of the rat race and traditional stuff they teach you in school:
“DON’T get a JOB! GET A LIFE!”

Even if you do have a job, you still have to keep trying every minute, hour, day, and that’s all I can tell you.

But still, it isn't about being rich. It's about staying close to what you truly think.

This person was lucky in that their father gave them a piece of advice that i think every parent should pass onto their children: "School isn’t so important.” It isn't. If only somebody had given me this same advise...

Re: What They Won’t Teach In School Could Make You Rich

That guys a moron.

Yes, most academic fields don't pay well.

But, no. There's nothing wrong with getting a job. If you become a something useful, have a career, then you don't actually join the rat race. The race applies more to McDonald's employees then to doctors.

But, there's nothing wrong with a job, or getting an education. Maybe the manner in which subjects are being taught may be debated, but gaining knowledge is always beneficial. And jobs allow certification for people doing certain tasks, and we're not going to be getting rid of capitalism, communism, or socialism anytime soon.

Freak: You can go die, whenever you feel like it Smile

Now, stupid bitch trolls aside, I overall enjoyed the article. I agreed with most parts of it, but was a bit "meh"-ish when he kept describing himself as "unique" and "speshul". On the other hand, there's nothing practical in the article. Just how to not follow the school->college->boring job way. That's not to say that his views are in any way wrong, but there are no clear indications or suggestions. Nothing new.

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

On a slightly more cheerful note, a father like that ought to give parenting courses.

You're both morons also =D

Saying something completely irrelevant and off-topic with the intention of annoying people is trolling- not stating an opinion you disagree with.

And, yes, I think he is a moron. Maybe if your IQs were above 75 you'd think of a better argument to explain your disagreement with my opinion.

Re: What They Won’t Teach In School Could Make You Rich

I don't appreciate how he was bashing things like "engineering". Get an engineering degree will get a job, and you will also get paid more the longer you go to school, and the higher your grades are. Also, if you like that kind of thing, what's wrong with that? Some people like going to school, but of course it's not "the only way" or for everyone.

I guess if you want to make money, you have to do other things as well. It's really about entrepreneurship and taking advantage of the capitalist economy. The richest people in the world don't work, they own stock in corporations and profit off the efforts of others. Biggrin

What should Gaiyara do Onii-chan? ♡

Whilst I do advocate autodidactism, I do realize that going to a college and getting a degree is an alternate method to educate oneself.
