RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Education

Greetings, fair people of the SS fora.

The subject I'll be writing about today is one that is on the mind of every human being, pretty much every day of the week: education.

When you talk to people nowadays about education, they tend to foam around the mouth and scream stuff like "ZOMG TEH EDUMACASHUN IS TEH MOST IMPORTUNT EVUUUR".

To me, education can be split in two types:

1. The type of education that implies common sense, using logic and respecting people. Which is the type I agree that everybody should have, yet I don't see how school teaches you to be rational/respectful.

2. The type of education that is made of stuff you know. How to write, how to read, how to do basic maths, how to operate on a computer.

Let's say that people, when they refer to education, think of the second type. But I look around and see that everybody can read, everybody can write, everyone can do 1+1, and everybody knows how to make a folder. I'm not going to generalise and say that everybody has this knowledge, just everybody I know. School is surprisingly useful in this case, but I don't see anything in teaching your kids how to read and write that a parent can't do. The subject of faily parents is one that I will not write about today.

Beyond this, I don't really see how education is useful in real life, except if you work in a certain area and that area requires specific education (for example, knowing how to use C++ if you're hired as a software developer).

Don't take me wrong, I do not, under any circumstance, promote ignorance or stupidity. People should learn about the things they like, even if they don't have practical uses, but to say that everybody should be "well-educated", even if that education has no real use is... I dunno, silly. Not to mention the fact that schools fail in educating people beyond the basic things.

We should first make sure that everybody can read and write, and then worry about how much they know about the theory of music.

So? What does education mean to you?

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Good fortune follows upon disaster;
Disaster lurks within good fortune;
Who can say how things will end?
Perhaps there is no end.

Re: Education

Education is the gaining of unbiased pure knowledge of one or more subjects.

"I heard a joke once. Man goes to doctor says "I'm terribly depressed". Doctor says "I know just what you should do. Poliacci the clown is in town, go see him, you'll be cheered right up." The man bursts into tears. "But Doctor, I am Poliacci." Funny joke. Roll on snare drum. Everyone laugh."

Also, I just realized I spelled "bear" wrong in my sig. I changed it, but, how disgraceful...

Re: Education

It doesn't mean anything to me.

The only good signature is a dead signature.
