RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

The Pacer Test

Hey, anyone else got the Pacer test at their school? We've started taking it weekly and...well...it's a bit harsh in my opinion. Now, I'm not like, an really really fat guy that can't do a push-up, I'm a pretty fit guy and I find the pacer test to be hard.
For those of you who don't know what it is:
"description: There are two variations of this test, with the lines placed either 15 or 20 meters apart. The 15 m test distance is used for the 2nd and 3rd grade or when there are space limitations. The test involves continuous running between the two lines in time to recorded beeps. The time between recorded beeps decrease each minute (level) requiring an increase in pace. The subjects continue until they are unable to keep pace with the beeps. There are a total of 21 levels, which would take approximately 21 minutes to complete.."

so every time you get across in time you get a point, I can get about 65, 75 if I'm pushing hard and that actually leaves me coughing and dizzy afterwards.
What's expected of us to pass? 90. 90 of these lap things. At present the only people that are actually hitting 90 and above are the kinda jock football player guys (there's 3 in my class)
Sure, this is a fair test if you're on some sports team, BUT THE MAJORITY OF US AREN'T! How is it fair that, for the first time in years, I'm getting good grades EXCEPT this fucking class?

I don't think it's fair.
opinions?

Alastor thanks you for reading his post. He also thanks you for not asking
why he is referring to himself in third person. Wanna get to know me?

Re: The Pacer Test

I have to do it. I usually drop out at 15 or 16. I've been doing it since 1st grade, and no class I've been in has ever had anyone that's gotten above 70.

Re: The Pacer Test

We took it last week.

I scored a 12. Smile

Now don't get me wrong, I could have kept going, but there was no point. They're not allowed to grade us on physical fitness, so, I don't find it worth dying over (because you're right - coughing, wheezing and puking is a common side affect of the pacer). If a monster had been chasing me through a jungle, I could have kept going. By a long shot. But, it's only gym class so, whatever.

Because of this lack of pressure, I don't see the pacer as a good or bad, just there.

It sucks that they're grading you guys on it though. I mean, how in-shape do they expect you to get through one hour a day of exercise? Don't get me wrong. I see gym class as one of those classes that actually is valuable - now and in the future - through building muscle and teamwork skills. But, grading people on something as silly as a number - the number of times you can run back and forth across a line, nontheless, is stupid.

It's hard to argue with - it is a good indicator of physical fitness and willpower. Of all things to grade on, I suppose it's one of the most solid, unrefutable things they could choose. But it's funny how they always choose the one thing that does not help prepare us for our futures. While it might be good for us to be able to run across that line 90 times now, what are we learning that will carry us into the real world?

Perhaps determination, willpower, and desire.

But, there are other skills that are just as important that could use building on.

They always choose the stupidist thing and make it count. Rolleyes

Damn I hate that test. I hate PE in general. It's the part of school that reminds me most of Prison.
Only five to ten people in our 30-40 person class ever pass.
It's a horrible way to test someone's 'fitness'.

Carla Franklin may be a whore. She may be a wonderful, kind, moral woman. Seeing as I don't know her personally, I cannot know for sure. However, I find her actions (suing Google, requesting the personal info of her critics, getting angry over random internet idiocy that she should ignore and be bigger than, trying to get this site in trouble because of a few users' commentary on the situation, etc.) pretty ridiculous and unwarranted. If she didn't want people to to be talking about/judging her, well 1. that's impossible, she's a human, and 2. she shouldn't have been a model or agreed to be on film. AND 3. she DEFINITELY shouldn't have sued Google and made all this fuss over a few random idiots whom she probably won't ever know expressing their opinion. Mmkay? MMKAY.

Re: The Pacer Test

To be in the healthy zone girls have to get more then 32 (if your 16) 23 (if you're 15) and boys need 40 (15) or 45 (16)

Probably 5-6 out of every class can get to 75, and that's where the pacer ends.

Actually, I find it pretty easy, and I am a person who has the athletic abilities of a drunken snail. Then again, we only have to do 42, but our distances are greater than 15 - 20 feet.

Re: The Pacer Test

He said 15-20 meters.

And the reason people would join Track or run in general is because 43% of deaths in America are heart related, and at least 90% could have been prevented if they exercised more. Running means you strengthen your heart, and since it can push blood faster, the time it takes for it to fill up it longer. When you're heart is filling with blood, it's resting. So, a stronger heart actually does less work, and creates less strain. If that makes any sense?

I love running... and swimming.

We took the pacer the other day and I'm PISSED.

All my life I've been told I've had to do 45 of those FREAKIN things,
And the other day our stupid Student Teacher told us that we only had to do 24.
I was like, okay, great, but at the same time it's like WTF was up with the 3-4 years I've felt like crap because I could never do over 30?

Re: The Pacer Test

Where I live it was called "The President's Fitness Test".

We ran from one end of the Gym to another end. And after a beep, we would have to run back to the other end (Repeat). If it beeps before you get to the opposite end, your eliminated.

I took it in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade.

But in 6th grade me and my friend was fighting over 2 girls. And one looked better than the other one. So we decided who ever lasted longer got the better look girl.

I ate 2 packs of Sour Power Straws and beat him.

Me: 30
Friend: 24
Max: Level 70.

Wow, you guys have some fucked up gym programs. I was never given the pacer test but it sounds like a warm up exercise we used to do called 'suicides'. They were called that for a reason.

Any way it sucks that you guys had to go through that. In my gym classes we played ultimate frisbee, volleyball, and learned yoga.

Re: The Pacer Test

Ayliana Wrote:Wow, you guys have some fucked up gym programs. I was never given the pacer test but it sounds like a warm up exercise we used to do called 'suicides'. They were called that for a reason.

Any way it sucks that you guys had to go through that. In my gym classes we played ultimate frisbee, volleyball, and learned yoga.

We have a coach that makes us do full suicides every day at the end of class and every time someone messes up.
