RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Teen Suicide Prevention Work Exchange Program in Montenegro

Just in case you were wondering, Montenegro is a country. Smile Remember this? This is by the same people.

From the page:
Quote:Introduction

Teen suicide is a serious problem that needs more focused attention. The public is often either uninformed or misinformed about teen depression, self-harm and suicide. The result is that teens are not receiving the help they need. This special work exchange program has been designed to help fill this need.

From extensive work with depressed, suicidal, self-harming teens, several conclusions can be made:

* There is nothing genetically wrong with these teenagers.
* They do not have chemical imbalances in the brain, as many people currently believe.
* They are highly intelligent, both in IQ and EQ.
* They are highly sensitive. They care about other people.
* They live in invalidating homes and go to emotionally unsupportive schools.
* Their depression, self-harming and suicide attempts are a direct result of their emotionally abusive environments.
* Teen suicide can therefore be prevented by changing their living environments.
* More suicides can be prevented by listening to teens, providing emotional support and helping change their environments than through putting them on medication.

This program takes all of these findings into consideration and offers much-needed help to young people which they can not find anywhere else.

[...]

The Ideal Volunteer

The ideal volunteer would be someone who

* Is free to travel
* Is under 25 years old
* Is able to speak more than one language
* Is a good listener
* Is open to new ideas and experiences
* Has had personal experience with depression, self-harm or suicide attempts

This, but they do bring up some good points to the causes of suicide.

So do you have to pay for a flight and food? I don't think I have hardly enough saved to go without work for 30-90 days .

Oh, it's pretty close to Romania. But I've got school, and my parents won't allow me :/

I'm really tempted to apply for this. I've been wanting to travel to Eastern Europe and this looks like a great excuse Smile

Montenegro... Aren't they that tiny country who just ended a hundred year "war" with Japan?

I wish they had some sort of psychologist you would be learning from, but hey, it is still an amazing opportunity.

Re: Teen Suicide Prevention Work Exchange Program in Montenegro

This quote sums up best my opinion on suicide:

Quote:Anti-suicide efforts often tend to irritate me, in a way. Society doesn't want people to
kill themselves, but I suspect this is mostly for practical reasons. After spending two
decades raising, clothing, feeding, and educating you, society expects to get many
more decades of work out of you in return. If you die early, everyone else has been
cheated of the payback they were expecting for all that effort they put into raising you.
You can be as miserable as you want, but for God's sake, don't kill yourself.

Wish I could help, but I'm too far away and I think I need help myself.

Re: Teen Suicide Prevention Work Exchange Program in Montenegro

Quote does sum it up nicely..

I got online classes and would be free to travel but I'm a heavy case myself and suicide prevention wouldn't be my forte.

Re: Teen Suicide Prevention Work Exchange Program in Montenegro

Scratchchin Hmm, I'd really like to get in on this.

My parents have said if in the future (i.e. 6-12 months) I still want to go, they'll pay for my food and stuff. The way they see it, if I was still at school they'd pay for a 'school trip' (probably with HIGHER costs if anything) and this is a chance to do some good and have some experiences before I get older.
