RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Hat Rebellion
So I protest my school's ban on hats by wearing mine every day. Today it finally got taken away. Apparently it will be given back at THE END OF THE YEAR. Let me tell you they picked the wrong person to mess with.
My sister used to go to this school, and she had a bandanna she was very attached to and would wear everywhere. The state school board made a ban on bandannas because of gangs, and I live in this small ass town and we dont have any fucking gangs around here. So, she wore her bandanna anyway. A teacher would tell her to take it off, she would, then she would turn a corner and put it back on. This went on for a long time. Eventually the teachers stopped caring and didnt enforce it.
It just so happens I have an abnormal number of hats.
I am going to wear a hat EVERY DAY until they return mine. And I will wear it. I'll also be a little shit for the duration. I assume they will take the new hats, so thats why I have a lot of them.
Please share your thoughts on the matter, and maybe suggest other ways to get my hat back and protest the ban.

HELL YEAH BOI
GIT EM
Filled your hat with dandruff and stuff when they get it, buy a like tub of crickets when they confiscate your next hat. You can get them in the pet store. It's cheap. Put it under your hat so like on your head. So if they ask why you had that say that you got some pet lizard at home and you brought the tub for his surprise birthday party that day.

RE: Hat Rebellion
They might ignore it or they might start writing you up until it escalates into suspensions or even expulsion.
Yes. Over a hat.
If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Yes. Over a hat.
I might get suspended but I doubt they would expel me, especially over a hat

Nice!
These sorts of bans are the perfect example of how so much about school is just a power-grab by people completely detached from the real world. What difference does it make if you wear a hat? "Well it ain't proppa for these youngin's to be wearin' hats inside! We gots ta teach 'em manners!"
The people that make these rules are idiots trying to make themselves feel better than other people for the most arbitrary reasons

RE: Hat Rebellion
i like that as a grown man I was able to get away with wearing my turban for my drivers license photo. too bad my ID kinda looks like crap.
yeah, hating hats is the most dated form of cultural prejudice. i think it started in like the civil war. what dead are we trying to honor again? our army seems to be targeting mostly the loser countries where (our) dictator steps out of line so we have to replace him with a more obedient lackey. I dont know if our modern veterans even feel much honor or even know why hats off is supposed to symbolize it.
necessary footnote: I have no problem with veterans in general.

UPDATE: So it turns out that I could have gotten my hat at the end of the day. I was not informed of this until my Dad mentioned it today. So i'll be getting it. Me Dad also said that the next offense would result in my Dad having to come get the hat.
I will, of course, be wearing it again.

Instead of crickets, just put some homemade confetti. Just get a hole punch, and punch holes in the paper, and put the round pieces of paper under your hat. That oughta startle the teachers, even if it's not as awe-striking as crickets.
