Your opinion?

Super Mario Odyssey - sswbm - 01-19-2017 04:02 AM

I'll probably buy it someday, when I have a Switch. Which is not anytime soon.

Ah, yes. Sorry.
Anyway, I think it looks really good, though with a striking resemblance to Sonice Adventure, and maybe a little bit of the Super Show mixed in.

SEGA doesn't own the concept of rolling or city levels.

I know, I just thought it looked similar. Wasn't criticizing. The roll actually looks like the one from the Super Mario Super Show intro

Or the one that was introduced in Super Mario 3D Land.

True, though that could have been inspired by it too for all we know

Most likely it wouldn't kill them per se. But it could easily put them on track to another failed console. If this happens enough they could eventually back out of the home console market altogether, leaving themselves as just a handheld company or turning them into another Sega. I assume they have a lot of money stored up from the success of the Wii so they're probably comfy financially for now. But the Wii U was a failure and the Switch seems to be another gimmick. You can only ride on gimmicks for so long. Whatever happened to making a solid console? I guess Sony and Microsoft have basically driven them out of that market. Even though the Gamecube was amazing, had great Nintendo games, it was a relatively poor performer revenue-wise. They're trying to leverage their expertise in the handheld arena now and transfer it to the console realm, I guess. Maybe it will work? Maybe it won't. But if it doesn't they only have themselves to blame.

Super Mario Odyssey - sswbm - 01-26-2017 08:44 AM

Oh yes, a portable console that you can connect to the TV. Totally a gimmick.

Everything that comes out of Nintendo will be called a gimmick. Motion controls, second screen, 3D, now this. THEY ARE NOT GIMMICKS.

Sony and Microsoft don't make TV consoles anymore at all. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are literally PC's in disguise. They have EXACTLY THE SAME INTERNAL COMPONENTS as a PC.

And people are falling for it en masse. The Wii U was the only real TV console left. And it had a controller that wasn't extremely cheaply made, and with a second screen in it. And it was hundreds of euro's cheaper than such a fake console (€100 less + no €60 per year online multiplayer subscription!).

That's how good at marketing Sony and Microsoft are. They can sell a PC as if it were a console and nobody outside of a few technologically inclined people notice. Don't be one of their tools.

I hope the Switch earns Nintendo enough money that they can afford to create a new TV console. Sigh.

Super Mario Odyssey - Geicosuave - 01-26-2017 10:22 AM

In case some of you dont know, the switch will have a subscription for wifi

RE: Super Mario Odyssey - sswbm - 01-26-2017 10:27 PM

I knew :-( Probably because
1. they saw Sony and Microsoft get away with it
2. they needed money to subsidize the hardware. Consoles (with the exception of the old Wii excluding development costs, and the new fake consoles by Sony and Microsoft of course) are always sold at a loss (the hardware is worth WAY more than what it's sold for) Normally, the 30% profit cut from games offsets this loss, but Nintendo has lost so much money from the Wii U that they can't afford it anymore. So they turn to a subscription...

All consoles are computers. I dun geddit.

RE: Super Mario Odyssey - sswbm - 01-27-2017 07:05 PM

A game console and a PC are different kinds of computers, though. They have distinct hardware.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have nearly exactly the same internal hardware as a PC. They are fake consoles. The PlayStation 1, 2 and 3 were real and the Xbox 360 was real. But then came the huge scam.
And people fell for it.

RE: Super Mario Odyssey - the Analogist - 06-18-2017 02:19 PM

I watched it.

ill probably get mario odyssey when the price drops

further,

i kinda hate modern games. my last console was a wii until i got a switch for free. i am still not into the switch in general.

after GTA: VC i never played SA and never regretted it. the extra stuff sounded kinda dumb. the bigness of worlds just means i need that much more time to explore and im kinda out of time for games in my life right now. im going to very slowly work my way blindly through BotW, but really my small game collection is going to be more for my kids when they get older.

Games are not about "FINISH IT FINISH IT FINISH IT FINISH IT FINISH IT FAST FAST FAST FAST"
Hell I never even managed to finish Super Mario 64.
I'm super glad that they aren't artificially keeping games short, like the way they are artificially keeping movies limited to 1½-2 hours.

Anyway where'd you get a free Switch O_O
