RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Your Ideal Life

What would your ideal life be?
I mean, really, not just, I wish I was a millionare and had everything I ever wanted. We all would, seriously, but let's go for something a little more thought out.
But as long as it's what YOUR ideal life would be, it can be as well or as badly thought out as you want. Whether it's possible or completely out of the picture, put it here. It's not a contest, just a discussion.

I'm sort of hippie, I guess. I'd like to travel a ton, go to a lot of different cities and live for a while in each. Play music for a living, be poor but happy, and have a lot of friends in different places. I know it's dumb, but It'd be cool just to explore a lot of different historic cities, go to libraries, play guitar in the parks, meet different people outside of the conventional societal situation, fall in love, and someday settle down, I guess, and live an unconventional life in a cool house filled with weird artistic stuff like Maude from Harold and Maude. But still get out and see the world and be involved.
I just want to live my life, meet people, enjoy the beautiful things, and be able to know people with opposing viewpoints without being ridiculed.
I mean, if I can communicate and debate and learn about opposing points of view without it turning into a slugfest, that's the best thing, right?
If we can talk in a civilized way about our differing opinions, we can only be better from it. It'll solidify our resolve in our own opinions and/or show us that ours isn't the only opinion, and help humble us enough to keep us in perspective.

Okay, that turned into a tangent, but oh well. That's sort of the point.

An it Harm None, Do What Ye Will
An it Harm, Do Only What Ye Must

Lighten up! This life was made for experimenting, making mistakes, falling on our faces, and standing up to do it all over again.
Live for Learning.

Carla Franklin may be a whore. She may be a wonderful, kind, moral woman. Seeing as I don't know her personally, I cannot know for sure. However, I find her actions (suing Google, requesting the personal info of her critics, getting angry over random internet idiocy that she should ignore and be bigger than, trying to get this site in trouble because of a few users' commentary on the situation, etc.) pretty ridiculous and unwarranted. If she didn't want people to to be talking about/judging her, well 1. that's impossible, she's a human, and 2. she shouldn't have been a model or agreed to be on film. AND 3. she DEFINITELY shouldn't have sued Google and made all this fuss over a few random idiots whom she probably won't ever know expressing their opinion. Mmkay? MMKAY.

Re: Your Ideal Life

I always thought my ideal life would be where I don't have to work and can just do whatever I want all day. Now that I have that, I don't know WTF to do with myself all the time. Laugh

I think my ideal life would be if all my friends lived in the same place or at least really nearby and we'd all hang out often and stuff. Those people PWN.

Re: Your Ideal Life

Ideal things I have now:
- a great living space, with/near friends but with a solid amount of time alone;
- work that includes a lot of variety and flexibility and at least pays the bills;
- good computer, fast internet, heat and water
- a decently functioning mind (mood, energy, motivation, discipline, etc.)

Ideal things I'm striving for:
- working on an awesome, ambitious project that utilizes my talents and those of other people to accomplish something really cool
- working more often and for more money than enough to get by (still with variety and at least some flexibility)
- doing a lot more travel, especially internationally
- having a way more than decently-functioning mind (which I'd have if I had really engrossing projects/work)
- learning a lot more, including languages, neuroscience, and all kinds of things.

And most of all: participate in getting my (and other ppls) experiences and ideas about education, learning, and alternatives to school into some fictionalized and/or documentary form that can reach a lot of people.

(I guess I could shorten all that into: 1. do lots of fascinating thing that stimulate my brain, 2. create things that help people learn & resist forced inadequate education, 3. have a good balance of alone time, hanging out w/ ppl time, and working with ppl time.)

Re: Your Ideal Life

My ideal life would be living in a warm area, near a beach preferably, selling my music for a decent living. I want it so I can live comfortably, but I couldn't care less If was wealthy, in fact, I don't want to be wealthy. I would like a small but nice house, isolated, but still close to cities and whatnot.

Okay. My more ideal life than my previous post would be to have superpowers. I want to be able to pause time and still move around and do whatever I want. I also want a robotic army that looks exactly like real humans, and they do whatever I tell them to. I will secretly rule the world without anyone knowing.

Re: Your Ideal Life

Lulz, I'd like the power to give myself powers without any restrictions.

But for an ideal life, i dunno, maybe just isolate myself.
For example, there's a decent chance I will inherit the home I live in, it's an okay size, it has a workshop and 3 acres of land, and the place is fully payed of so I wouldn't have to worry about losing it.
I could fence the place in, grow my own produce and find a way to get just enough money to pay a couple of bills and buy some meat, and just live away from anyone.

I AM A THIEF IN THE NIGHT I WILL SAVE AS MANY AS I CAN

I KEEP THEM IN MY BASEMENT

Re: Your Ideal Life

Most importantly, I'd like to live alone. Okay, a dog or a cat would be fine.
Other than that, I'd like to have either a really flexible work time (if I were to get hired) or not work at all. Well, besides the work implied in making awesome site designs.

A good PC is an imperative, also internet access. I'd spend my days writing, designing and playing games. And exploring, if the place I live in is relatively close to nature.

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Living somewhere cold, with alot of money, mostly building things whenever I want, managing missions to other planets, being social whenever I want, travelling from time to time, having a girlfriend, and probably other stuff that I can't think of right now.

ps Or going on epic sea adventures doing epic stuff like discovering new lands(which sadly cannot happen since we live in the 21st century)

Re: Your Ideal Life

I've always pictured myself living somewhere warm, and remote, like Guam, Samoa or even the smaller islands of Hawai'i.

I would have a full time job that pays well, most likely as a scientist working in the field. I can't stand being chained to a desk every day. I wouldn't mind being in an office a couple days a week. I have interests in geology, oceanography, and biology, as well as computer science and astronomy. So it's quite possible that I could end up working with an observatory or even NASA (they need earth scientists as well.)

Financially speaking, I intend to be well off, but only because I know how to live below my means, and I've already started investing. I also know how to make a home energy efficient, which eliminates a large portion of utility bills.

I intend to have a large family, made up of both biological and adopted children, with a husband, preferably one who likes to cook. My children will be homeschooled but only until around 6th grade. That way I can teach them critical thinking and autonomy, so that if they do end up in a public system, I won't have to worry about them becoming mindless drones.

And much to my families dismay, my husband will most likely not be white. Not because I have anything against white people, but because I know that skin tone has no bearing on love.

Re: Your Ideal Life

My ideal life?

Well, I would live in the South, hopefully on a large piece of land that could serve as a farm if it needed to. It'd be a place I could go to church every Sunday, and have a peaceful life away from the godforsaken big city. Hopefully I could make a living selling books, or get a job at a University. Most definitely it would have to do with philosophy.

I really hope to publish books someday, mostly novels, that address primeval human fears and emotions. Stories about what it means to be human, dystopias too. In a perfect world, I would make all of my money off of them.

I would like to get married. In fact, it is probably one of the biggest goals in my life. I don't want kids though, at least not unless their adopted. You see, life is a whirlwind of uncertainty and fear and at the end there's a big unknown. I don't want to bring a kid into something like that, but if one already is in it I might as well give it a good home.

I also want to have some role in changing the world for the better. Nothing fancy, just maybe raising ruckus to lower local taxes or giving an endorsement for a Libertarian candidate that means something. I wouldn't change the world by being a politician, you couldn't offer me enough money to jump into that lion's den.

And that's basically it. I want to be remembered as a great thinker, as something memorable. Maybe that way I can do it, and still lead a comfortable life in rural America. Life probably wouldn't be that way at first though, but I'm willing to work for it.

Re: Your Ideal Life

Um, ignore me, but I think mine would be...

I'd be a good 10 years older. I'd be taller (darn my midget-ism), and a lot more toned. I wouldn't leave my stubborn mindset, but I'd leave all my EatingyDepresseyOCDeySelfInjuryey stuff behind. I'd be one heck of a fighter, and I'd probably fight a lot - so what, I'd get beaten up pretty badly from time to time, that's the fun of it. I'd have no friends, no family. I'd be able to help people on an emotional level without the people ever feeling attatched to me, but in a way that I can still do some good. I'd be succsessful in an instrument I like, people wouldn't care about my spelling mistakes either. My results wouldn't matter, and I'd have devoted all my area's of research to some branch of science.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't have a house. I'd just go from place to place.

Re: Your Ideal Life

I'd like to spend a decade or so just roaming the world with a backpack full of the bare essentials (food, water, gun, weed, journal, etc.) going to all of the shittiest places on earth and trying to fix things as best I could. Not just Habitat for Humanity shit, either. Like if some Somali warlord was oppressing his people, I'd help blow up his palace or whatever. Then I'd write a book about it and live off that.
With the money from it, I'd buy a boat and a van. the van would go on the boat and, assuming I'd found true love by then, we'd sail around the world docking at different ports and then driving around in the van.
One kid sounds good, more than that and it would just get too stressful. If the school system is still around by then (ideal life my ass) we'd homeschool him/her. Once the kid is off to college, we'd get a cabin in the mountains and I'd spend the rest of my days writing and tinkering with mechanical stuff, until the day came when I'd be diagnosed with a terminal illness and ride my flaming sled out of an airplane over Mt. Everest while naked and high.

Can anyone say, Super Terminator Time?

And mine would be living in a climate that's in a forested climate, sort of like now in Pittsburgh only not as rainy in the winter. Razz I'd have an arsenal of weaponry at my fingertips; AT-4 rocket launcher, M-82 barret sniper rifle, M-16s AK-47s and AK-74s, Tec-9s, Uzis, MP5s, Desert Eagles, Dragnov SVDs, RPGs, M4s, m203s, M249s, G36s, m-60s, RPKs, M24s, Spas-12s, Beretta 92ms, etc. All of us SS members would have teleportation pods so we could met up at my house to chat, play games, have a few beers, etc. House would be big, but not huge. I'd have a game room with pool table, air hockey, ping pong, 70 inch LCD Hi-Def TV with Playstation 3, Sega Dreamcast, Wii hooked up to it. Ideally, I'd be able to kick anyone's ass in a fistfight, but very now and then I'd have a rib/arm/whatever broken. Thats part of it, right? I'd have the top-of the line computers, with incredibly fast internet, large memory, great graphics, and customized settings. I'd be a pro soccer player for Manchester United, as well as a mercenary for hire. I'd have a Porche, Jeep, Humvee with mounted .50 caliber machine gun, M-60 Patton Main Batle Tank, Ford Escape, and a limo. Every Tuesday I'd go to the community center and spend an hour and a half helping out. Oh, and I'd somehow control the government, making school optionial, youths have the same rights as adults, and basically everything this site stands for come to life.

[quote="Rebelnerd"]I'd like to spend a decade or so just roaming the world with a backpack full of the bare essentials (food, water, gun, weed, journal, etc.) going to all of the shittiest places on earth and trying to fix things as best I could. Not just Habitat for Humanity shit, either. Like if some Somali warlord was oppressing his people, I'd help blow up his palace or whatever. Then I'd write a book about it and live off that.

And this.

Oh, and Rebelnerd, you do realize that instead of going cruising down Mt. Everest at 300 mph, you'd probably either die on impact or hit the ground, roll/bounce for a few yards, and either impale yourself on an ice spike, go plummeting to your doom off a cliff on the mounain, or fall into a crevasse.

NO! Teleportation pods are evil! They don't transport you, they just kill you and create an identical copy at the other end!

The quickest way to kill a revolution is to wait for it.

Lulz at what you said, Rebelnerd.

And if it makes you happy, I'll ditch the teleportation and we'll all just have infinity plane tickets.

Re: Your Ideal Life

I don't want any kind of government or authorities. I just want freedom to go and do ANYTHING except hurting people with_no_reason.

Re: Your Ideal Life

My ideal life is one where I have the power to stop time whenever I want to, walk through objects, fly, and become invisible whenever I want to.
