RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

I made a thread about this exact same thing a couple months ago. I made a channel, which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/user/SchoolSurvival

I haven't done anything to it, so yeah. I will give the password to 1 person and they can do whatever, that is, if you guys even want to use it. So whoever you decide to lead the operation I will give the password to.

If no-one else wants to lead it, I will, but my organizational and technical skills are probably less than adequate. If anyone else has been thinking about it, now is the time to say.

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

Is there really nobody on the site who wants to make videos? This idea has come up a number of times but it never goes anywhere. Youtube and numerous other sites have millions of people uploading things. You'd think the biggest problem would be quality, not a lack of quantity.

I'm sure there are various reasons -- people not wanting to be on camera, not having a camera, not having other people who want to be filmed, not having an idea of what to record...

I propose that as a first step, whoever's interested help work out some ideas and write some scripts or scenarios. Then we find people to make them. I might be able to help with that. But how about we start with a list of ideas?

As soul mentioned, we should have some funny ones. I think there's also a place for something dramatic that involves two or more actors, like a conversation about school or self-education. And, videos that are informative, like video versions of some of the articles on the site, would be easy to make and useful.

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

I think the best way to get our message across would be videos with only a voice and a sideshow of pictures, possibly a small video or two in there. No-one has to be on camera then.

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

You don't need a camera to make a propaganda vid. Not even a microphone. Many of the videos on youtube are just pictures and text...

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

How many views/subscribers do those text-only vids have? I mean, that's certainly one way to go, but actual video recording has a lot of potential to communicate. There's a reason it's so popular.

A variety of content is key though, there's no reason to argue against real video. Some people can do that and some people can do powerpoint. It's not like we're limited to one format. I personally think actual video, and good animation, is more effective than just text and more likely to get links and rise above the average stuff out there and get noticed.

How many views do crappy webcam videos have?

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

Well, it'd be preferable to use a better video camera than a crappy web cam. I'd like to make some stuff that's pretty high quality, even if costs money and takes some work to track down actors. There's a reason film & tv attract so many viewers -- it can be a very powerful medium. And very little has ever been produced in film/tv/motion-video that effectively conveys the idea of questioning school.

A lot can be done with text and images, too -- definitely go for it. It's just a different approach.

But until someone makes vids, why not brainstorm some ideas for either method?

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

the problem isnt that no1 WANTS to do it, its that no1 KNOWS how 2 do it or dosent HAVE a camera, heres wat we do:

-give the password for use of a select group of ppl, PM people the password like alucard, avenger, me, classclown, Jonno, xcriteria, fire elf and any1 else who wants in, BUT NOT TO A NEWB!-they could be Justin...this way, production will go up and we can spread the word faster since we hav moar ppl on the same account

-Search videos on youtube that have to do with being against school and advertise SS, remember, SS is a non-profit organization so No, Your Not a Spambot

-Get avenger or some1 else to make a powerpoint or movie, dosent matter whichevar one

-???? (Do Nothing...?)

-PROFIT!

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

Here is how I see it. 1 or 2 people have the password. 1 of those 2 people make videos regularly, and the other kinda runes it. And then for everyone else to submit videos they have to rapidshare them or something and the people can watch it and then upload it if they see fit.

Also, if nobody wants to make videos, I can make them if you want I guess. I have a crappy handheld camera I can carry around, a webcam, and a microphone. I would mostly want to make videos where I don't show my face, but yeah, if nobody else wants to I will make da videos, but I am not really the best, so yeah...

Re: Why don't we use youtube?

Hey, seems like we're making decent progress. I can make a good Powerpoint and MAYBE a video of an acted unfair situation. Me and starwarspup are in the same school, maybe me and him could do something. But I'm 100% chance I can, and if we get the channel running, will, make a PowerPoint. I'm thinking of adding some rebellious music to it as well.

Hidden stuff:
TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

Max Stirnir Wrote:"In the time of spirits thoughts grew till they overtopped my head, whose offspring they yet were; they hovered about me and convulsed me like fever-phantasies -- an awful power. The thoughts had become corporeal on their own account, were ghosts, e. g. God, Emperor, Pope, Fatherland, etc. If I destroy their corporeity, then I take them back into mine, and say: "I alone am corporeal." And now I take the world as what it is to me, as mine, as my property; I refer all to myself." The Ego and Its Own, pg. 15

I've got a vid ready, if you'd like to check it out. Not quite sure how to send it to you though, and I obviously don't have the password.

I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins.

Maybe a file sharing site?

There are a few ways to capture video from webcams -- any video editing software should capture, including windows movie maker, and there are some special capture programs.
