RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

(my essay) Spread the Word

To Them:

For years we have been forced into a system we surely could care less about.

We come in young and hopeful for the future, but come out immature, brainwashed, stupid, and pessimistic.

Our guardians have been lured into surrendering us - like slaves - into a dirty corrupt system, all with the help of fixed advertising and promises that we'll become happy, rich, successful, smart, and patriotic citizens with a high-paying white-collar job, fast cars, a nice wife, and 1.94 replicant children. Instead, all you can get out of this place is stupidity, hate, and ignorance.

We are "taught" things we either don't care about, know already, or believe are useless in our natural everyday lives. When we attempt to question this fact, we are called rude and arrogant by people who could fit this same profile. We are "taught" that we must follow all rules and that we must not question authority, right before we move to our next class to learn of the triumphs of the civil rights movement.

When a teacher is rude and we call them out with all the respect in our bodies, we get in return an even ruder lecture. When we try to make our own learning interesting, we get ostracized and punished, without reason.

We don't expect to be entertained. We know that. You don't need to be show ponies. But what's the point in attempting to educate us when the methods used don't work and in fact bore us to eternity, making you lash out? Why whine about us when it is the fault of your own employers and maybe even you?

And why is it that you always call us too immature to "do this" or "read that", but then attack us for attempting to be mature? Why do you force immaturity on us? Why do you always stereotype us? Remove important issues from our reach and say we'll pull a Columbine when we question your "authority"?

To You:

All in all, this "revolution" can't be fought or won with guns, war, or violence of any kind. We can't and must not lower ourselves to the level of our enemies nor shall we make them stereotype us even more. We just can't.

Nonviolence is the only answer. It is the only way to show them that we aren't immature brats bent on instant gratification, like they make us out to be.

Spread the word with protests, stickers, flyers, shirts, walkouts...any nonviolent way to say what we've been talking about for years.

But whatever you do...

Spread the word.

Brilliant! Cool

I wonder why, in our textbooks, we had 2 pages of Civil Disobedience (by Thoreau), when the unabridged one in a book had 18 pages? Seems odd, don't you think?
We almost never read the full stories or full novels in the highest English class my high school offered. We read only small parts of Don Quixote and the Illiad. Pathetic.

Genius. Pure genius. One of the best anti-school papers I've ever seen.

Once I figure out how, I'd like to put this into a youtube video for our channel, if that is alright with you.

Re: (my essay) Spread the Word

It would be ideal if someone could read it, either live on video or as a voiceover some other content.

If all else fails you could use text-to-speech software, but it'd have more emotion if someone who really believes it performs it. That might be hard to find on SS. :/

Or we could hire a voice actor: http://www.voices.com/

I'll probably read it, unless someone else wants to.

Don't show too much emotion, nor seem emotionless. Don't fake. Oh, and credit me (for the essay, not the video, duhcourse). Thanks.

Re: (my essay) Spread the Word

Even though I have a crappy voice, I have recorded myself speaking it. Once I get some content to put on the video while the voice is playing, I will upload it. Hope it works.

That works. You have some in mind?

I mean if you have a concept, just go for it, but if you want suggestions maybe people can post ideas.

Re: (my essay) Spread the Word

I think the more ideas people post the better, so I can choose the best ones and go with that, as my ideas often aren't very good.
