RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I want to upgrade my computer
I wish to upgrade my computer to a 3GHz - 4GHz Intel Processor and 4GB of ram.
I am not very knowlegeable in the area of computer hardware, so would there be anything else I would have to update to make these things worthwhile?
I am not sure if i phrased that question well but oh well...

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
My OS is Vista 32-Bit
I am using a Dell Inspiron Desktop
1 or 2 GB of Ram, I forget which and am too lazy to look it up
2.0GHz Processor
I have a fairly good graphics card, one I bought at the store, I forget which.
Is that enough info?

You wanted to upgrade it to a 3.0 - 4.0Ghz processor?
EDIT: I think you shouldn't have much of a problem, what type of RAM are you getting?
And to unintentionally be more of a pain in your ass, do you know what your motherboard is?

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
Bane: You got it.
But one question, are you looking for just one core with 3.0-4.0GHz? Or a couple of cores that add up to that?

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
Multi-core CPU's don't "add up" to more ghz, they each have their own speed (usually the same speed, though it may be possible for them to be different, I don't know) and can do different things at once.

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
Soul: I know. It's just that some people think that multi-core processors add up to a total and work together to process one thing at once, instead of having multiple processors working on multiple things.

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
Do you have a custom computer or a pre-made one?

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
Do you know what it is called?
If you do look it up, if not... erm.. tell me the brand and I'll go look for it

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
Ehh I can't find the motherboard on it, crap
Screw it, I don't think I can help you :(
But from my basic knowledge, you might not need any adjustment, just maybe a 500W power supply and maybe an intake fan for the extra heat it will spew out.
What type of processor were you planning on getting?

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
http://crucial.com is a good memory company... they have a program on their site that will detect what kind of memory your computer supports. Whether you buy the RAM there or somewhere else, you'll know what specs it takes.
It's important to know what kind of CPU socket your current motherboard has. There's a program that will detect that, too, at http://www.cpuid.com/ (Just uncheck the "Ask toolbar" during installation.) It'll also give a lot of info about memory and stuff.
Also, Dell systems usually have a "service tag" AND model number somewhere on the machine. See if you can find one of those. You should be able to look it up on their support site. If all else fails, you could call them or do a live chat.

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
If you have the expansion slots, I say go for it
(Maybe ask someone else here just to be 100% )

Re: I want to upgrade my computer
xc ftw.
I would check this out, though. http://www.gtopala.com/
It's what I use when I need to figure out what hardware is inside the machine without going through the hassle of breaking out the screwdrivers.
