RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The golden rule

I don't believe in it, I mean in todays society "Do unto others as you would like to be done unto you" is pointless. Thats about as logical as telling a bank robber "stop that" And hoping he puts down the bag of money. I hate when people live by this supposedly all powerful golden rule. If you live by the golden rule your going to get screwed. I don't know how many times I have done something nice just to be screwed by the same person later.

It would work in a utopian society, but where not one. You can't trust anyone anymore. It wasn't always that you had to lock your bike or put bars on your windows. The golden rule just doesn't work anymore. And it's all because of some ass not happy with his share. Trying to screw you over. And now we all live in paranoia.

Had to move on. Account is dead.

Re: The golden rule

Please ignore me, my posts are usually full of shite...

Of course, but wasn't it always pointless? So does that mean now we have to do anything to get ahead ourselves if we do not live by it?

I don't think anybody "lived by it" in the first place. Of every era there were the selfish. Completely giving in is even worse than "living by it", IMO. Sure, some people may screw you over, it's life, and it does mostly and eventually, make you stronger - but it depends on how you react. If we weren't nice, how would we make friends? Has anyone ever done you a favour?

I agree, society is pretty messed up, but good is there if you take the time to look for it.

Re: The golden rule

Yeah, people will screw me over, so I should screw them over first just to take the initiative... uh. No. That only makes it worse, and I have this thing called a conscience, and I'd rather do the right thing and get screwed over than do the wrong thing and have the upper hand over some asshole. People will screw you over whether you're nice to them or not, so what difference does it really make? I'd rather be nice. In fact, the less nice you are, the more people will want to screw you over. The golden rule isn't about trusting people blindly or being an idiot, it's just about doing the right thing. Sometimes the right thing includes hitting a bank robber over the head with a shovel so that he doesn't hurt anybody. Such is life.

Re: The golden rule

I came to the following conclusion several years ago; its a consperacy. No, really, just hear me out on this. Who are the people that preach this the most? The people that have the most to gain/make life easier when we all form a harmonious circle of bullshit. The people that are put in charge of us. So at an early age we are encouraged to not speak out of line, not hit others and be idiots. This then hopefully develops down the line even more so, so that we fight even less. This is done so that they, rather than actually have to work, can sit back and enjoy having sheep. yet I find it funny that these are the people that are most in violation; teachers, parents, cops exc.....

Re: The golden rule

i think it should be changed to something like: "do unto others as you expect them to do unto you". i think it would just work out better.

life is just blah blah blah. we hope for blah, and sometimes we find it. but mostly its blah. and waiting for blah. and hoping you were right about the blahs you made. and when you think you just got the whole blah damn thing figured out, and your surrounded by the ones you blah. death shows up and blah blah blah.

The Golden Rule only works if every single person in the world believes in the Golden Rule.

The golden rule is not "be as unobtrusive as possible and let injustices happen". One may follow the golden rule and still speak out. Following the golden rule only stipulates that you would not take actions against people that you would desire that they would not take against you.

Quote:The Golden Rule only works if every single person in the world believes in the Golden Rule.
Nope. You'll never have a perfect world, true enough. But what is better? One person following the golden rule, and one not? Or two not following the golden rule? In the end, the world is a better place simply because one person is doing something to make it a better place.

Though, personally, I think the golden rule is fine and all, but I prefer another phrase. "Do what you think is right, but take care in selecting the most harmless means in achieving the ends."
