RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Trouble with "free-learner" is that school "education" is free: it could sound as if the term simply means that you aren't paying for it, rather like freeloader.

Have you considered out-learner? Learn on the outside, and learn faster and better too.

I like auturgy. Free-learner could be miss interpreted as soulriser said. Instead of Free-learner, what about free-educated or something alonge those lines.

Free-learner seems nice.
But from some point of view we ALL have ADHD, I find it true hence we are only interested in subjects we like and we are quite easy distracted. YET that is basically every teen nowdays. Though shouting: "We are the ADHD group! Biggrin" wouldn't really be.... ok in our society.
I'd also love the name open-minded or something like new gen? New Gen - opposing the past, living the present for the future? ;D

Anything better than "Idiot that will live on the side of the road and work at McDonalds" that I casually get from classmates that deep-down I strongly, no, very strongly dislike.

I think that free-learner is very easy to take advantage of and negatively exploit. The fungus thing was damn good! Biggrin But difficult to remember. :(

So we are all wanting to be autodidacts. Wasn't Leonardo Da Vinci a self-thought person, - and autodidact. Or not, did school even exist when he lived?

Albert Einsteins.

Congratulations humanity, because you refuse to let go of the old and evolve you actually make people believe in 2012. Not only that, but you're the only species on Earth that were able to make it possible, now we get to sit until we die because we couldn't get to Mars. We have failed as a society and don't deserve our gifts to survive for this long. Maybe this is why dinosaurs are extinct, we sure aren't any better than the dirt you say we're created from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla...DvwSOFto#! Noo

Why do you think it's better to go to school than homeschool? So I can get indoctrinated against my own will and have to do tedious tests and have to mind-numbingly memorize everything than instead getting homeschooled, or even becoming an autodidact? (Unfortunately, autodidactism is pretty much illegal in the United States now, bullshit)

Free learner is nice, but I would say that a more "legalese" title would be concerned citizen. When you show up somewhere with a problem and say "Hi! I'm a concerned citizen and I think my problem is a real issue with the community." nobody is going to tell you to screw off. As they would if someone were to say "Hi! I dislike school and think that it's not just my problem but yours as well."

Free learner sounds the best...but is somehow inadequate to describe those who choose the traditional methods because of various reasons.

Troll or newbie??Popcorn

Either way, I'll answer. There are people who go out of their way to learn stuff. They love learning enough that even at home there is a lot of knowledge and information- encyclopedias lying around, various projects, art, writing, etc. Just because you don't give a shit don't assume that everybody else is the same. If you've read articles and stuff on this site, you would have seen that we mostly complain that school limits our learning and outright kills any enthusiasm off.

You can interpret it as "We're so clever/awesome/intelligent that school is a hindrance to our intelligence rather than an asset. In short, we're too intelligent for school."

Well, the more modest people here won't be too happy with that. It's still true, in a condensed way, though.
