RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: One simple and easy change schools can make.

Just had a thought, making this change might bring an end to mandatory schooling as well, because what's the point of going to school if you've already passed all the tests and can go to uni/whatever? Especially if the tests could be taken more often.

People will then see how ridiculous mandatory school is.

It's worth a try, but yeah. There are too many morons that value going through the tedious, time consuming process than actually enjoying learning. I've heard crap like "They're preparing you for the 'real world' by making you work!" blah blah blah. If it's actually bearable for students, there are those who will think it's just not hard enough.

Fuck those people.

I had no idea that old threads were a no-no. Sorry. Cuckoo This is my last post on this thread. I personally think that it's stupid to get mad over a old thread being posted in, but this isn't my forum. Smile Keep in mind that that was my very first post here and I'm new.

Re: One simple and easy change schools can make.

thats a hell of a good idea and i dont think the value of a diploma would go down because the test would be the same and so if you could pass it then you were considered a high school grad so it would have the same value as a regular high school diploma or a GED. The only reason i could see teachers and parents no going for it is because they all think that teenagers and kids are just basically retarded and cant think up any philosophies or theories that could be worth testing.

Now, see, here's the thing: this has got to be the most ingenious school-reform idea ever conceived. Hug
But there is one problem with implementation, which is that NO-ONE KNOWS ABOUT THIS IDEA. Yuck So people who hear about this really need to tell others, via email, facebook, at school lunch tables, or any other form of communication. Spread the word, people! Please!!

Very good, this is exactly how the Chinese Gao Kao works.
It is not possible as it is a great transition of power. The textbooks with the monopolies would lose money, teachers would be jobless. Throughout my experiences, I have noticed many aspects of life are due to improving our economy at the expense of our personal liberty.

Re: One simple and easy change schools can make.

When I started school, I was horrified to discover that they weren't interested in teaching me anything. I couldn't believe it at first, but I checked with my sister who had been there for two years already and found out that she hadn't learned anything in all that time. Well, it went on like that for about nine years before they actually got more serious about teaching. What a waste of childhood!

I had the idea at the end of my second week at school that there should be a book available which any child who wants to learn should be able to read in order to find out exactly what schools are supposed to be teaching, all set out in sufficient detail that a child could learn everything simply by reading through the book, and having done that, no one would have any right to force them to go to school ever again. I promised myself that if no one ever wrote such a book by the time I was free, I would write it myself and liberate future generations from the prison that is school.

Was it a crazy idea? No: I still think it could work, so I have now written the book, but in the form of an interactive Web site. It isn't anywhere near finished yet, but there's now just about enough of it there to let other people in to have a look at it, and I'd certainly be interested to hear your comments. You can find it here:-

http://www.magicschoolbook.com

I hope this doesn't count as spamming: it's directly relevant to this thread and I will not be posting the URL again anywhere on this forum.

Re: One simple and easy change schools can make.

Thanks for the tip, SoulRiser. I'll sort that out straight away (I'm fairly new to the Net, so I there's a lot I don't know about how things work - I've been developing everything offline for several years).

My real point in coming here was to search for talent, because I can't write everything myself. I'm looking for fellow school-haters who have high levels of knowledge in subject areas where I lack it, an understanding of how real teaching should be done, and preferably good programming skills (although that isn't essential).

Of course, this whole thing might never be anything more than a hobby if the demand fails to materialise, and it's quite possible that most school-haters simply aren't interested in learning at all, so anyone who wants to work with me on this needs to think of it as a lot of time and effort for no reward other than the satisfaction that they may help a few children escape from school by enabling them to prove to their parents that homeschooling is viable and needn't put huge demands on their time.

I'm sure that's the case, but what I can't gauge is the proportion of school haters who like learning relative to school haters who don't. The idea that they can escape from school by taking control of their own learning and racing years ahead of their age group may only appeal to a tiny minority. There's a group of three million school haters on Facebook, but posting a link there doesn't appear to have attracted any visitors. It may be that they just like having a good moan about school, but in reality they can't be bothered trying to escape from it if it involves working a bit harder for any length of time. Most of them are too old in any case, but I thought there'd be a few.

I found a much smaller school-hating group on Bebo which is more likely to have members nearer to the right age, but again there was no recognisable response from there. I'll let you know if the situation changes, but I'm beggining to think I must be a freak.

Anyway, I'll just keep plodding away adding more content in the hope that it helps a few depressed children to escape from the empty hell that is school. I'm really writing the site for myself in case I get reincarnated so that I won't have to go through school again. I only hope I'll be able to find it when I need it.
