RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Grammar Nazi's suck.

Well, I probably shouldn't start a negative thread since I'm still a newb, but I have to get this off my chest. I am so sick of grammar nazi's tearing apart someone because they have poor spelling/grammar. I see this shit all the time on pretty much every forum and it's just so unnecessary. As long as it's readable, don't pick them apart. Even then, people shouldn't be so nasty about it. What did they ever do to you?

I even see this stuff on these forums, and it pisses me off. I mean, people find a safe haven away from the judgmental attitude of school only to get shit on for having bad spelling. Why? It may be annoying when ppl spL leik dis, but it's no reason to belittle them.

RANT OVER.

Re: Grammar Nazi's suck.

I can see where grammar nazis are coming from, because it does get annoying, seeing people talking like that all over the place. But i used to have grammar a lot worse than what i do now, i didn't even capitalize sentance starters sometimes. I still forget. I used to get it in the neck all the time, but i do try now.

To me, this would be some sort of proof that, in some cases, people bitching about grammar does work. No, we shouldn't spend half our time arguing over it, and no, we shouldn't hurt people's feelings. But how will we get taken seriously, if our peers spek liek dis? Nobody would pay attention.

I can see the point in it, but it does happen too much in some forums. Amazingly, it doesn't happen too much here. We tend to just waste our time arguing about TA...

If people wouldn't type like they were on crack, we wouldn't have grammar nazis.

But what about those people who just make a few mistakes? For instance, on a rant website, I spelled "right" "write" when complaining about college. Some asshole said "How could you even make it to college if you don't even know the difference between "right and "write"? I got a lot of other crap too, but a quarter of the following comments were focused on my one spelling mistake. That wasn't the only time when an interesting topic turned into a petty flame war over minor mistakes.

As for those whose entire writing is screwed up and hard to read, yes, it should be pointed out and corrected, but they shouldn't be chased away over it. Give em a chance before tearing them a new one.

Yeah, that's excessive.

Re: Grammar Nazi's suck.

Standardized spelling, punctuation and pronunciation are just political control tactics. Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China, used it to "unite" all the various dialects of the surrounding regions so that he could better conquer and control them.

Languages naturally evolve, and it is a beautiful process. Languages are organic and alive, and to force them to be used a certain way is like caging a wild animal, just a way to destroy what one does not understand.

Now that you have been enlightened by the above wisdom, let me tell you that Th15 iz knot a LAngUaGe! 1337 and chat lingo are textual farts, to be looked down upon with scorn and derision, as well as excommunication of those using the offensive typography.

Smile

Good post, and your spelling and grammar has been improving a lot. Smile In my opinion, as long as it's understandable it's alright, but sometimes I like to point out little spelling mistakes as a joke / to annoy people.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Re: Grammar Nazi's suck.

I don't like it when people make a big deal out of the grammar of a post that was mostly readable, but I also won't read a post that's barely legible due to lack of punctuation. The only thing I really can't stand is when people don't use fullstops or paragraph breaks, the rest isn't such a big issue really. But yeah, people who use someone's grammar as an excuse to belittle them and ignore the actual content of their post are just lame and retarded.
