RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

"Programming is the easy way out"
That quote right there made me want to slap my pro-school friend so hard across the face that one of his ancestor's souls would explode.
So I was just talking to him then I asked, "What do you want to do as a career?"
He said that he didn't know, so I asked him if he liked computers and maybe he should learn some programming, so he said that everyone was doing it and it was the easy way out.
It made me really angry and wanted to do this to him
Thoughts?

Silly Amortisatie, programming ain't work. Breaking your back all day long digging holes is manly stuff, not this pansy bullshit.

UGH! I hate that attitude. Never mind the fact it's something you're good at and enjoy, taking the 'easy way out', is some horrible crime. Guess everything has to be made difficult.
I don't know your friend, but from what he said their alone, I think a punch in the face would be justified.

I was trying to imitate a response you'd get from most close-minded persons. That "smashing a keyboard" ain't work, and that you have to do physical [well, using a keyboard is physical, but that's not what I meant] labour for it to be called "work".

Re: "Programming is the easy way out"
I'm not going to lie, but as a programmer myself it is easy to learn languages.
BUT
The skill comes from using them appropriately to make efficient programs with less code and easily readable code. And depending on your line of work in programming, there are various other skills needed. I think this is what your friend didnt understand.
I mean just look at a game like Runescape or anything else written solely in JAVA. If you actually start learning java, you will seriously shit your pants realizing it is impossible to write such a complicated game in just Java (and the Runescape team only has 50-60 members).
(I don't play Runescape, i'm no loser )

Hahaha yes as long as you arent in the top ten you're right, that last line was just for jokes anyway
And yeah, that's what I mean. It is extremely hard to make a game out of just Java. It takes lots of effort and extremely great planning.

I want to be a programmer myself, and I know it's going to be easy, yet hard too. Also, why not take the easy way? It gives more free time for other things such as actually living a life.
And win picture is win.

Re: "Programming is the easy way out"
Eh? I'm still confused.
Quote:He said that he didn't know, so I asked him if he liked computers and maybe he should learn some programming, so he said that everyone was doing it and it was the easy way out.
At first this seems perfectly reasonable, he doesn't want to do what most people are doing.
Quote:He said since almost everyone was learning it, it had to be easy
lolz. Er yeah, sure. Learning to code basic stuff isn't hard, but actually being good at it and doing complex stuff in an efficient way, well that's another matter entirely.
Quote:He then said that he didn't want to be a sheep, then said he wanted a high-paying job [/irony]
Programming is pretty high paying as far as I know.
Is this the same guy that you said is coming here soon?
